Why has no one mentioned The West Wing yet?
Similarly political, The Newsroom and House of Cards.

Have thoroughly enjoyed both.
The Newsroom was alright but the West Wing is in another league completely. Probably one of the best TV shows ever.

The Shield is ace.
Similarly Southland, NYPD Blue and Homicide: Life on the Street.

Hill St Blues started the "quality cop show" genre but I fear it's dated now.

Spartacus.

Slow-mo sword fights, blood, adventure, LOADS of boobs, shagging, lady gardens etc - essentially a soft-porn version of 300.

Spiral is leagues ahead of anything else I've ever watched, excellent suggestion.

Seemed over the top and silly to start with but if you take it as almost computer/video game and stick with it, it wraps up nicely, I actually started off not that bothered but then a little upset that it finished!

I've just finished series 2 (well, the kind of half spin off thingy - 6 episodes). It's really good.

Its a prequal of sorts because the origonal actor that played the lead was off due to ill health (huntingtons? I think?)

Yes, exactly. I think it was leukaemia and he died mid-way during series 3. Really, really sad. Seemed like a decent bloke.

Same again from me. And The Wire of course. Also worth a watch (only 7 episodes) is Generation Kill. It's about a Rolling Stone journalist embedded with a United States Marine Corps reconnaissance team in the Gulf War. Initially it comes across as a bit "America? fk, yeah!" But it's very, very good. Produced by the same guy who did The Wire.

Pretty much covered already but again I'd add weight to:

GoT.
Shield.
Wire.
Homeland.
24.
BSG.
Hannibal.
Law and Order SVU - we are always watching this.
Southland.

As I've said before, I never got The Shield, seemed a bit disposable. However Southland is a whole different level imo, hugely underrated.

IMO - and in no particular order:

The Sopranos

The Wire

True Detective

Spiral

Borgen

The Killing (series 1 though)

The Bridge (the original Danish-Swedish version)

Homeland (but definitely the original from Israel - a different class as well as a different kettle of fish)

Mad Men

State Of Play (the UK made series)

House of Cards (the UK made series, there's a pattern here!)

A Very British Coup

Brideshead Revisited (the original series)

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Game Of Thrones

Friday Night Lights

I think I got through seasons 1-3, but gave up on it. I just found it a bit dull, and couldn't really understand the critics' love in over it.

Each to their own... I still absolutely love it, excepting for a tendency for the first episode of each series to be a slow start.
