A bit OT I know, but it may be topical giving all what's going on with new SW stuff right now.

Does anyone know if any remastered originals will ever be put out by Disney? Ie, either original theatrical releases or the VHS equivalents from the 80s?

After watching ESB and ROTJ on Netflix the other day I was left feeling like they'd been ruined in all the areas they'd been tweaked with, mainly because the music hadn't been re-scored very well at all. But the quality is very nice indeed.

I'd imagine Disney would be up for this as it'd net them plenty of copies sold I'm sure?!

Bit of a grey area I think but google "despecialized edition"
Ooo they look just like what I'm after. George Lucas what a div!

Time to see if MPAA watch i2p users with any success hehewink

Back on track.
Same here, watched it for a second time yesterday and enjoyed it just as much. Even the guy who does the I Hate Eveythign series loves it

Sorry but Star Wars would be in the number 1 spot for me, the original and still the best and then shock horror, ROTJ. I just don't get the big deal about Empire. Sure it had the killer I am your father twist but it was just so melancholy and the goodies basically got their ars*s handed to them....repeatedly. So while I can appreciate all the adult aficionado's waxing lyrical about how it's the better made film, story wise it just didn't deliver the feel good factor that was essential for the 10 year old me and that bitter taste has stuck with me. For that reason I'd place it the lowest of the OT in my ratings list.

FYI 20gb each, so not one to obtain if you have limited storage or download limits.

I lost count how many times I watch the original Star wars at the cinema when I was 10. It holds great memories for me. However, I have watched and always enjoy Empire more in the decades since (although I still equally enjoy SW). Empire is slightly more 'grown up', and it is the interaction between Leia and Solo that I love, more natural/flowing dialogue - nothing to do with the 'I Am Your Father' scene. Empire also looks fantastic still (to me, at least), and the city in the clouds scenes still look fantastic.

So, with all of that in mind, if I were 10 again, it would be SW without a doubt. But now, in my late 40's, it has to be Empire, every time, with SW a close second.

Sky Movies have the 6 movies on a loop at the moment so I've ended up catching quite a bit of the prequels lately. After watching Force Awakens (4 at cinema, 1 on BluRay) they are even more painful/dull than I remember, even RotS. The acting is just appalling, even very solid actors struggle with the terrible dialogue.

Hmmm... I was with you on the Star Wars being in number 1 spot - but think you may well have to watch ROTJ and Empire again... Empire has loads in it.

ROTJ started to contrive a lot of the story along the lines of the prequels.. It seemed like the rot had started to set in by then - but the Speeder Bike scene was and still is amazing! smile I might have to watch all 3 again soon - pre-update of course!! smile

Empire is my favourite of the original trilogy.
It was also the fist one that I went to see at the Cinema.
I watch Ep IV a couple of weeks later when they did a 'double bill' at the local cinema on a Saturday.

I was blown away (and still am) with the opening scene of Ep IV - superb in surround sound and quite possibly one of the best openings of a film ever.

I think Empire is "better" (subjective) precisely because the good guys get there asses handed to them on several occasions. The relationships between the characters are also better.

I hate the prequels with a passion - the acting and dialogue are dire.....

I also think that TFA is on a par with ROTJ, looking forward to Rogue One and Ep VIII.

I know Empire is the better film, better script, better direction, better acting, loads of interesting stuff happens but it's just too dark. I know dark seems to be all the rage these days, I'm just not sure if it "fits" Star Wars. I loved the whole farm boy goes off on a big adventure setup of the first one. It has that magical fairytale quality that is captured by only the very best "kids" films that enables it to transcend it's roots and to be watchable by everybody while still retaining it's wide-eyed charm.

The tone of Empire always felt a bit off to me. The rebels get their ars*s kicked on Hoth, the main protagonists get captured, 3-PO get's blown to bits, Han get's frozen then Luke get's his arm cut-off. It's like Star Wars if it had been written by REM. Yes you could argue it all needed to happen to setup the finale but it always felt like the middle film where bad stuff happens that you have to endure before you get to the good finale to me. ROTJ isn't half as well made but Jabba's sail barge rescue then the climatic 3 way Endor\Space\LukeVsEmperor battle has so many scenes that have you punching the air that Empire never has. I think it's become fashionable of late to say Empire is better cos it's so dark but to me it's not the film that really encapsulates the magic Star Wars that has kept me a fan for all these years.

A great line hehe although i do disagree, even as a kid i thought ESB was the best and the remainder follow in the order below.

ANH/TFA.
RotJ.
RotS.
AotC.
TPM.

As someone mentioned above, Sky have them on loop this month and comparing the orginal trilogy with the prequels is night and day.

Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor are great actors and when i first watched the prequels i thought they were ok in them but now, utter st.

Really don't know why the performances where so poor in the prequels. Ok the script, plot etc where pretty dire but you have some top rate talent there who had the potential to lift it out of the doldrums. It's made more frustrating as there are occasional flashes of brilliance in each movie where you can see some of the old Star Wars magic but they are far outweighed buy the dross.

The new one while not perfect is better in every way and I'd put it on par with ESB in my estimations so

ANH
ROTJ
ESB\TFA

then
.
..
...
....
.....
......
The prequels

There was a chap on YouTube with nice BR burns and case prints etc.

Why oh why oh why they can't just make these as a set for like £50 is beyond me. They'd be an instant buy, and not many things these days fall into that category.

There has to be someone out there providing copies for 'free', while at the same time accepting bitcoins or beer tokens hehe

I'm sure I'd read somewhere that they were going to release the original theatrical versions on BR/DVD.

Was a while back though.

After making so much money with Force Awakens and the rest of the films I reckon Disney should be brave and go back and completely retcon the prequels out of existence and make their own first trilogy!!

No more Jar Jar, mitachlorians, excessive CGI, dreadful tiny Anakin, dreadful teenage Anankin, tax revolts and did I mention excessive green screen. Come on Disney you know it makes sense!!

Prince William & Harry are going to be in EPVIII dressed as Stormtroopers, Harry said he already had a Stormtrooper uniform he can wear. Until he was reminded of the differences of the Star Wars ones.

I'd love this to happen too but I'd imagine there might be some clauses in the contract somewhere to stop them from messing with George's "vision" too much.

Complete opposite for me..... ESB is at the top for me, precisely because the rebels get their arse handed to them. I loved (and still do) the dark element to the film. There are not many cinematic experiences that match the first sighting of the AT-AT's on Hoth (The opening fly over of the Victory Star Destroyer in SW-ANH not withstanding)

The middle part of a trilogy is normally the weakest, since you don't get a definitive beginning or end, but I love Empire. Everyone remembers the "I am your father" moment, but the realisation that there is also someone Darth Vader bows to must have been pretty surprising at the time
