ROTJ is a simplistic mess tbh.
All we have is the Han rescue then death star mk2 fight.
No back story, no idea how they found it etc.
when I rewatched it recently it just fell flat tbh even without the ewok crap.
ESB is dark complexed and has twists in , a story and great acting. By far the best of the original trilogy.

Did everyone saying ESB is the best really think that at the time though? I remember watching it with a bunch of friends when I was about 10 and all feeling a bit subdued and melancholy at the time at how depressing it was that the "goodies" lost. I remember discussions for years after where people would say it was the one they retuned to the least due to how depressing it was.
It's only years later in adult life after a famous critic (can't remember who) started to say it was the best one cos it was so dark that it seemed to become the fashionable opinion to rate ESB. Not saying that's how it happened for everybody but that's certainly how I remember it.
Again as an adult I can understand that technically it's definitely the best film, just saying for me and a lot of my friends at the time it was definitely missing that feel good factor that made the IV and VI great.

I will never understand the love for ROTJ, and some even putting it above Empire. granted, the space battle was second to none at the time, and Han Solo was great as usual. But this was offset with the feeling I was watching Muppets/Fraggle Rock in Space! I watched this at the cinema when a teenager, and being quite underwhelmed by the Jabba's palace muppets and Ewoks, who were clearly just children in teddy bear outfits (with expressionless faces). For me personally, this is the least watched of the original trilogy.

couldn't agree more, the space battle of Endor was probably the best sequence of all 3 originals for me, the only reason I watched ROTJ.I watched the Netflix ANH last night.
It is a great film... I'm sure a few bits were changed from the old VHS I had.
Having watched all three again recently (ESB, ROTJ, ANH), all I know for sure is that George Lucas shouldn't meddle, the original 3 are the only three that need to exist and tell the 'story' of SW perfectly well without any other films being made.
And any further films added just break the original 3 even more.
BR versions of the original 3 (un meddled with versions) and I'll be happy that SW starts and ends with them!

The reason why the shine wears off the more LUcas meddles is that he meddles alone, back then the whole effort was much more (not many people realise) a collaborative effort between Kircher/Kurtz and LUcas.

There is merit in what he was trying to do because there is more story there to tell which is interesting, but he just did it so badly.
The EP123 are the same too. There is a great story there about why Anikin ended up the way he did, and the Clone Wars and all that jazz, but it's the way it's done that just makes it 50% cringe fest.

I don't think there is a single 'new bit' that isn't just hurting the story telling for being there.

In Ep1-3, Lucas had one very good idea, I think. But ruined it with the infantile voices and script for the battle droids. There is merit in what he was trying to do because there is more story there to tell which is interesting, but he just did it so badly.

I think I know why he wanted droids instead of a human-type army, and that is so he could realistically show what damage the light sabres could do without making the films non-child friendly. Great idea!
But then, in Ep3, that goes out of the window and Anakin is shown being sliced to bits. The films are very confused and very uneven, not satisfying both adult and children the way they should have.

The droids just look very ineffective and insubstantial. No weight to them whatsoever. Even the sounds effects are rubbish, when Obi Wan force pushes a few they sound like match sticks falling. There was a story going round that they made them like that on purpose to make the clone troopers seem more bad-ass but I don't really buy that. They were just rubbish full stop.I think I know why he wanted droids instead of a human-type army, and that is so he could realistically show what damage the light sabres could do without making the films non-child friendly. And don't get me started on boy Anakin, out of all the hundreds of thousands of child actors in the world, is that REALLY the best they could come up with? Should have got Joel Osment or that freakishly good kid that was in Looper in.

Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor are great actors and when i first watched the prequels i thought they were ok in them but now, utter st.
End result of a st director (make Darth Maul sound evil...) and an obsessive reluctance to let anyone else know the full story/context of each scene, as I understand it. Gassing Station | TV, Film, Video Streaming & Radio | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
