I quite liked the episode this week?

My only complaints would have been exactly the same for the old three:

-The SUV section could have done with a bit more technical info (and why was the wrong engine in the Merc??).
-The interview section didn't interest me at all. To be fair I think they've made this even worse now, the lap is crap and the forced interaction is awful.

I really didn't get what he was saying regarding his ''emotional moment''? He said something about being reminded of his first ever car, that his mother bought but could ill afford, to now being in a multi million pound F1 and the disparity between the 2.
I think he was going for a moment like the Porsche 928 one in the Patagonia Special.

Spectacularly badly.

Surely he must have had those same feelings with those white Ferrari's or the California? Either that or he was just wanting to show how much of a ''car guy'' he really is, so the likes of us on PH will see he has an affinity with us? Instead, he just looked like a ginger tosser.
Indeed.

Someone in the other thread said Chris Evans lacks self-awareness. Between this and the LaFerrari mutual masturbation-fest on last week's show that is pretty obvious.

So why didn't Evans do something around finding a Mini like his old one that his Mum bought him, or perhaps try to track down the exact one he did have, as something to add to EG or even the main show? Would have had some buy-in from the viewers I'd have thought, the emotions might have been a bit more realistic, and would have been a change from the ONTG format in having an old car survive an episode without being mutilated

I bet Mr Bean didn't even cry when he smashed his F1 up

"Ex-nurse Minnie raised him and his two older siblings alone after the death of his dad, Martin, when Chris was just 14. She worked two jobs and borrowed £500 to buy Chris his first car, a Mini, on his 17th birthday.

He recently learned it was up for sale and tried to buy it, but when the owners found out he was after it, they tripled the price.

Chris says: “My mum would really disapprove if I over-paid, so I didn’t get it.”"

Hmm, that's a vile thing to do in my book, even if he's the most annoying person on tv right now.

Maybe the vendor wanted it to go to a car enthusiast?

That was much better.

A million times better than the first episode and certainly better than the last couple of series of the previous format.

Just goes to show what a rubbish, tired format the show has. I think the presenters aren't the problem but the fact that it's all just the same as it's always been forever.

I thought Clarkson, Hammond and May had become unbearably dull, predictable and scripted so the new blood is a welcome change. Evans less so, but I can live with him as he seems genuinely enthusiastic and happy to be there, but Leblanc is excellent.

I think everyone is fixated on the presenting team when in fact for me, the problem is the staleness of the material. It needs a new studio, no Stig, no SIAWhateveritis and a new approach. But still, what a step forward from last week.

Be interesting to see what the old three bring to the table on Amazon. I had got to the point of finding them unbearable but now wonder if that was because of the format.

Chris Evans in tears because of the F1? Really? Ultimate cringe.
When he was on the Big Breakfast, it was when the McLaren F1 came out and they had one on the show... CE couldn't have been less interested in it if he tried. He barely knew which way it pointed; he is a late-comer to cars it would seem.
That was in his very early presenting days..... one can imagine that your interests in exotica increase as your bank balance increases biggrin
Not if you're interested in cars...

I've always been interested (I'm sure most here have), but I can't afford a McLaren F1 now or before.

The word is dilettante' which is Italian for 'knob' it seems...

Agree. The old show was tired. Rose tinted glasses by many. The second episode was entertaining and the best thing on during the time slot. Sunday evening is hardly riveting viewing

Well I'm only just catching up with this, iplayered the first "episode" this evening...

Thought it was a disappointment. What a great opportunity for a clean sheet of paper reboot and a refresh of the tired old format, which seems pretty long in the tooth now. Instead it was trying too hard to continue the Clarkson era show exactly.

I actually don't mind Chris Evans as a host/presenter but still think he needs to deploy himself more sparingly on screen... Would like to see more of Harris actually doing a bit of geeky motoring journalism and reviewing some cars, crazy concept for Top Gear I know...

Anyhow, quite a few posts saying that show 2 is an improvement so I shall give it a chance. The extra programme has potential.

I am still struggling with the new TG but what has surprised me is I am actually enjoying MLB the more I watch him. Evans is his usual TFI Friday shouty self but did we expect anything else ?

The way Evans is going, he will end up the weak link as so far MLB has stolen the show.

I'm happy to keep going with it, some decent guest, Enjoying Matt le Blanc droll approach. Evans needs to take a bit of a chill pill but he is just being him, I've watched him for enough years to know his style.

I am also happy they haven't drastically changed it.

Will never be as good as the 'Three Amigos' watched them for many years but life moves on and too bh about a car show as many are doing on social media etc is just a bit sad imo.

If you did, how did you feel about the new Top Gear?
It's the same as the old Top Gear with new presenters.

I find Mat LeYank a bit amateurish, but apart from that it's ok.

I agree that episode 2 was way better than episode 1 and much as I am a fan of JC, RH and JM, the Africa SUV film was way better than the old TG Argentina trip.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this before ( Can't be arsed to read through and find out to be fair ) but apparently viewing figures for episode 2 were down to 2.8million, and the US figures were........wait for it..........388,000, yep, that's all. Obviously MLB not such a hit in the good ole US of A.

I don't like Shouty man/boy or whatever he is, MLB is improving, but really would love to Chris Harris show shouty man how to really drive. I will persevere with TG for now, but only because it's the only thing on, on a Sunday that's worth a watch.
