I heard an interesting contribution on Sky this afternoon. The interviewee suggested that the reason that the format was not changed is that many people around the world see the show subtitled or dubbed and so the "subtleties" of the humour that was inherent in the Clarkson Hammond and May era didn't always translate. Or need to do so.
BBC played it safe by keeping the format as of old. Foreign markets would be happier & the BBC wouldn't run such a risk of alienating (sic) those valuable markets.
I suppose you don't muck about with the winning formula but IMO Clarkson WAS Top Gear and you just can't replicate it with new presenters. I enjoyed this series but as a car show. If I wasn't a car fan I wouldn't have been particularly entertained by it. I agree that MLB/RR/CH line up would be good for a car show, but that's not what its success was about. I want it to continue but it must cost an absolute fortune to produce and I don't think the viewing figures will merit it long term.BBC played it safe by keeping the format as of old. People have different opinions on people in the public eye, and god knows some on here have laboured tirelessly to let the internet know that they have yet again seen/heard Chris Evans and yet again not been enamoured, as well as pointing out that he is apparently unforgivably ginger.
However, gleefully trying to be the first to suggest that he won't survive the next twelve months is fking odious behaviour.
Indeed I remember when this was a half decent car forum! However, gleefully trying to be the first to suggest that he won't survive the next twelve months is fking odious behaviour.
Last nights episode was surprisingly good. I even quite enjoyed CE in the Frontline MG, though possibly more due to the car than the presenter. If the BBC can keep the momentum going and win back the large numbers of people who abandoned it early on I really think they'd have a winner again.
MLB totally makes the show, without him I think it would be doomed. Reid has the enthusiasm but his god awful London 'street' accent really grates.

The thing is, people just don't want to watch 'car programs' anymore.
The BBC were discussing it on Radio 4 earlier and they said that the reason Top Gear used to work is because it wasn't really a car show, but more entertainment featuring 3 middle aged men who went out of their way to be funny, sexist, rude and offensive, which is what the public enjoyed.
The BBC said they were basically stuffed as they don't really want to produce rude, offensive and politically incorrect TV, yet the public clearly don't want to watch a 'car show'.

BBC and TG need to remember that the Graham Norton show is their number one chat show, and Graham does an excellent job of it!
TG only got the big stars in after Jonathan Ross got sacked, their show doesn't need celebrities on it. No reason you can't get the odd one on, but maybe avoid the Jesse Eisenberg where the guest clearly doesn't care.

IMO Clarkson WAS Top Gear
Up until 4-5 years ago maybe. In recent years he has turned into some sort of unfunny middle aged parody of himself. Pompous, slapstick, and buffoonish. Don't get me started on the faux un-pc things he comes out with. He simply wasn't half as funny as he thought he was. With hindsight, Chris Evans wasn't the answer, but it still needed a shake up.

They don't need anyone else...
Matt leBlanc to take the Clarkson-esque funnyman role (just without the over the top buffoonery), Harris to play the James May style - slightly nerdy but generally likeable type, and Rory Reid playing the Richard Hammond, slightly younger than the other two, trendy role. That probably works quite well. We'll still get the 'Cult of Clarkson' members insisting they won't watch it without their man though lol.

You need serendipity too.
Well congrats to those wishing ill on Chris Evans, you've got what you wanted. You'll be the same glass half empty whingers who moaned about the last series and you'll probably do the same with the new Amazon version.
No win situation I feel.

Chris Evans could have made a brilliant Top Gear.No win situation I feel.
Instead he decided to make a st one - with "How AMAZING is THAT!!" and the Timmy Mallett shouty shouty presentation style.
I bet he doesn't behave like that when he is around his wife or friends.
All that was needed was for Chris to realise he is not the centre of the universe - and just talk like a normal person.

Could do with some tweaks still, but as I'm not the BBC boss, my opinion is useless
It has the potential to be pretty good "car" show, with some added light entertainment....leaving the GT crew to the buffoonery
