We'll have to agree to disagree then. I think the scenes involving her Daughter just work to further reinforce that she's been drifting in space for so long.
Marf, a polite disagreement with some well thought out argument...this is not the PH I know!! What happened to ill formed ranting, use of caps lock and personal insults....FACT!! wink
Alright alright.

YOU'RE WRONG YOU PHILISTINE! Now, to settle this with fisticuffs!

I think the scene also helps reinforce the relationship Ripley developes with Newt later on.

BAH you are both wrong

FACT

Hmm I lack suitable smileys

Seriously it is such a cracking film, don't think it has dated too badly apart from odd CGI shots of the dropship in atmosphere, the film has the weight and mass to special effects that even modern CGI tends to lack and the pacing is brilliant

How they could have cut the sentry gun scene from the original version beggars belief.

Adds so much to the tension and looks f'kin cool too.
Those remote sentry guns are superb, one of my favourite parts of the film. Yesterdays science fiction is today's reality

All the scenes in the directors cut make the whole film better. How they didnt include them first time round is beyond me.
Disagree with that, sentry gun bit is brilliant but with all the guff with Ripleys daughter its too slow to get going, think that was Cameron's reason as well. The ideal for me would be the normal edit plus the sentry guns
What aboot the extra scenes at Hadley's Hope?

Hehe, The army apparently tried to mimic the smart gun harness and tried for a while to no avail only to find it was a steady cam harness off the shelf.

This was in a program following DERA a few years ago. Or did I dream it?
Sound like bks, the army don't develop their own kit, and I can't see why they would need something like it anyway as it limits your movement.
Might be but it was in the program that was following a while at DERA. It was a comment from on the people in the show at DERA (might only have been a thought exercise) and I remember something about it. They had a US soldier on secondment testing a helmet mounted camera for battle field info relayed back to commanders and a Hawk testing a new rocket or another and the pilot getting it in the ear for not setting the camera running when he should have. It was a few years ago.
The programme was on the various DERA departments. The episode you mention was about their Human Factors team and followed the development of FIST - Future Infantry Soldier Technology programme. FIST didn't have a steady cam type weapons platform, but what it did have was the following:

  • Mircrowave comms to enable video feed - didn#t work in long grass
  • Gun cam to enable shooting from cover - didn't work
  • Digital nav using GPS - in their test they put it in on the wrong way round so that the PBI chap ending marching for miles in the wrong direction.
The project - as shown - was a disaster but their report to MoD focussed on how it should have gone rather than how it did, which was somewhat naughty.

Missed it last night, just watching it now. Got to the bit where Ripley and Newt get trapped in the infirmary with the face huggers when a fk-off mahoosive spider comes running across the floor towards me! yikes

I bloody hate it when reality decides to mimic art grumpy
