I'm really surprised that import tax on a car costing $23k is only £800!!
I think thats a bit fishyFrom a popular import website ie took me 2 mins on google
"You will need to pay 17.5% tax and customs duty of 10% unless you have owned the car for more than 6 months (and can prove it) and if you are intending keeping it for your own use for at least a year after entering the country. These days you also need to show that you have lived in the US for those 6 months too and the car has been driven. licenced and insured during that time. This is to catch all the scammers that pretend all this in order to avoid the duty and tax. I think Customs have closed the loopholes. "

Also, there was no mention of having to make modifications needed to get the car road legal and registered in the UK.
Although that might be a bit parochial as the show's shown around the world, it was on the tv when I was in Tanzania last month, lord knows what they thought about Brewer's "'old yer 'and owt!" antics.
Finally, Brewers seems to have not been shy around the buffet whilst he was out in the states.
Nevertheless, a good show and is series linked in this house.

I really enjoyed it, watched it on the plus box. Frankly I tend to speed past the worst of the Brewer bits, makes a great change to see some American cars.
I think we're waaay past the point when it's meant to make economic sense, it's just an excuse for a show about interesting cars, and a bit of 'man tv'.

Car= £14000 + £1400 import tax at 10%
Parts= £543
Shipping= £1840
So, that's £14000 + £1400 + £543 + £1840 = £17783!
£17783 x VAT at 20% = £21339!
Didn't see the episode but to clear up the confusion:Parts= £543
Shipping= £1840
So, that's £14000 + £1400 + £543 + £1840 = £17783!
£17783 x VAT at 20% = £21339!
Historic vehicle would have been imported under BTI rules.
No import duty and VAT of only 5%
I wouldn't be surprised if he lived over there for around 6 months not only to get the reduction on export costs but also to do all the legwork and sourcing of the cars and parts. I wonder if he was filming anything else while he was over there as well like his Frontline Battle Machines series. Then add on a holiday after it's all done then back to the UK with all the cars and parts and start filming the UK scenes in a cafe with a laptop and a mobile. Did he look tanned and fat having gorged on US junk food at the start of the first episode?
I'm know little about this area but think if a car is old enough or special enough it's NOT subject to the usual application of UK duty and VAT when imported.

If the car is one-of-a-kind, over 50 years old, or of signifigant historical importance, you’ll pay no duty and just the Classic and Historic VAT rate of 5%.
Happy to be corrected though.
