Robert Helpmann's performance as the Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was pretty damn scary.
Agreed. Far too menacing for a film like that I always thought. It scared the living whatnot out of me as a kid and my 2 lads would watch from behind their fingers when they were little. There was an English actor called Colin Jeavons who looked very similar. Even today, if something comes on with him in it, it makes me shudder.

One of the most underrated films and excellent use of selective colouring make it a film buff essential

And would you believe, he used to appear in children's programmes?

I thought Plan B was pretty convincing as a nasty piece of work in 'Harry Brown'
Indeed - that was one of the bleakest and most disturbing films I have ever seen -stayed with me for weeks. His role in that film was improvised in large parts - particularly his interview scene. I suspect he might not be that far from his character Neil Maskell in Utopia was very good as the shambolic shuffling psychopath Arbie
Nick Chinlund as Donnie Pfaster in the X Files episode 'Irresistible'
He made a very convincing serial killer.
