Brainiac with Hammond was better.
Johnny Ball, back in the day, was far better than either.Edited: Actually, I think Open University that were on late nights on BBC2 were the best - I really miss them.

Secret life of machines with Tim Hunkin with great demonstrations assisted by Rex Garrod were the best for me.
That was an excellent program!! I think it was probably that (and the great egg race) that set me down the engineering avenue tbh!!Agreed with the consensus on ManLab, bit of a dissapointment, would have just about been ok without all the stupid editting however. I am quite capable of understanding and enjoying a program without uneccessary added Jepardy, Tensions, Time shifts, 3min attention spans, Whats up next's etc etc

Plus fours, biblical moustache, balsa wood, steam engines, nylon windcheaters and flares.
Dig it up on youtube.
Maybe it's just me but I've never got the big fascination with James May. He always seems arrogant in a somewhat distant manner and his presentation style always reminds me of a 'know it all' geography teacher. The one who'd wear daft jumpers and think he's cool by wearing his hair far too long!
I saw the first ten minutes of tonight's show and then started on the washing up! Far more entertaining! The first ten minutes felt like 30 minutes. When 'The Times' described it as a 'fabulous show' I thought I should give it the benefit of the doubt but it's no exaggeration to say it's one of the worst shows I've ever seen! And I've seen Wild at Heart!
Seriously though, it was so disjointed and completely irrelevant! Making a kitchen worksurface from concrete looked like something you'd see on the set of Porridge. Singing outside a girl's house would lead to arrest for stalking and I doubt many of today's girls would be impressed by 16th century poetry! I'm sure a ball kicker's salary would be of more interest to some girls these days! The bomb supposedly blowing up was too daft for words. And Alexander Armstrong seems to be in everything from To the Manor Born remake to Reggie Perrin!
No doubt May has made millions from TG, books, personal appearances, We Buy Any Car (if you give it away!) sponsorship etc etc so it seems a bit of a sickener that his latest money maker shows him polishing shoes and making fish finger mandwiches - manwiches haha not! I'm sure most people in normal poorly paid jobs could come up with something far more amusing in their lunch hour.
As much as I can see why some people hate Clarkson, he is still the most entertaining motoring journalist on TV. Hammond and May have never cut the mustard with me.........mind you May might cut the mustard next week if he's making ham and mustard manwiches!
Come back Quentin Willson, all is forgiven.......................well maybe not the clocking lol! It's just a pity Count Quentula can't turn back the clock to the mid 90s when Top Gear was actually a decent car show that was more about cars than egos.

I liked it.
The editing sucked though. Why can't they just run the article through to the end. Next time I disarm a bomb I will not take a break to make a fish finger sandwich.
Why not ? You have to wait 45 minutes for the salt crystals to form anyway. Rather think I'd be making some proper "sauce tartare" though - May's mix sounds foul. The editing sucked though. Better than 90% of stuff on telly, but that isn't really saying much.
I like May, I liked his big idea show, I liked the toy ones. This on the other hand seemed to have no real content - 1 hours worth of telly and he did what? Made a sandwich, a worktop and defused a bomb?
I was hoping that it would be a bit deeper (as a lot of his other stuff is) but it seems to be dumbed right down - showing the map of where the train goes 10 times? Really? - held very little interest. Making a fish finger sandwich - really? Not funny enough to be part of a tv show and he got it wrong anyway - brown bread, toasted, loads of ketchup - none of his boke looking "tartar sauce"
I will give it the benefit of the doubt as it was the first one, but I can't help but get the feeling that the map of the "Man Lab" will feature heavily throughout the series.
