Watched "Man On Fire" last night. Definitely one of my favourites
Superb film...
Touching, yet hard as nails.
Another that's in my top 5

Independence Day Resurgence: I love the original, not in an ironic hipster way but because I think it's a genuinely good action film. But this was rubbish, throwing in far too many characters and never having any sense of urgency or tension. I did however invent a drinking game whilst watching it, which involves taking a shot every time:

- they lift a scene directly from the first movie
- someone is completely oblivious to a massive event happening right behind them
- they interrupt an action scene to show unrelated characters making a bad joke

n.b. I accept no liability for death or illness resulting from this

Rewatched the first three Bourne films, they are not as crappy as I remember, still fairly xrappy, but that that crappy. FF through the wk fight scenes and the pointless action sequences, but the stuff where he is sat/standing and chatting to Landy or others was rather good, if only thrte could have been far more of that, than endless running or shaky cam. Cooper, Finny, Cox and a few others made it.

Out of curiosity, what do you consider to be great espionage thrillers?

Maybe because it was so hyped.
I didn't like any of the characters apart from Rorschach.
The whole film bummed me out not helped by the appalling Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen.
I didn't like the book or the artwork.
Not my thing I guess. smile
Ah, I thought you liked the book.

The film actually turned me onto the Cohen version of Hallelujah, love it now. biggrin
I loved the book and have ever since I bought it in the 1980s. I lived through numerous rumours about a film, often cringing at the suggested cast. When this one came around, I genuinely feared it would be rubbish but I loved it at first watch. All of the characters worked as they should have, even though it was impossible to make them exactly the same as they were in the comic.

And although the Leonard Cohen piece jarred first time around, at each subsequent viewing I felt it worked perfectly.

There was a trailer where Muse played "Take A Bow" as Ms Jupiter and Dan Dreiberg broke into the burning building which should have made it to the film.

I especially liked how they changed the ending to make it more coherent. They got a lot of stick for doing that but I applauded it. The original "alien invasion" idea felt a bit forced, and far less likely than the film's ending.

I have 2 or 3 different DVD copies of this. I ought to work out what I have really. I think one is a Bluray of the Director's cut. Although I'm clearing out my DVD collection in favour of a media player and on-line sources, I'll keep that one.

Steve Jobs

Managed just over an hour. Can't think of a single thing in that 60+ mins to comment on.

Casablanca. I have probably seen it many years ago but really enjoyed it yesterday. Probably seems very dated now but still a cinema classic I feel.

Stuck with it until the end. I found the final act very moving.

Michael Jackson's "This is it"

7.5/10

Behind the scenes 'documentary' about the show he was due to perform before his untimely death. A really great insight into MJ through the way he interacted with the musicians and dancers. Seemed 100% passionate about the music/performance. Really enjoyed it.

The Wolf of Wall Street

Interesting story and decent performances on the whole but I found the film making itself lacking somewhat. There were obvious over-dubs and some odd editing which looked liked Scorsese was hiding continuity errors but in some cases it made & compounded them. These flaws served to take me out of the movie and look at it rather than watch it.

meh.
I read the book first, and was hoping the film would be as good. I don't know why, I can't remember the last time a film was as good as the book, but it was just a bit of a let-down.
Never is a film as good as a good book. It's impossible.
Generally I'd agree but can't re WOWS. I finished the book a week or so ago & found it a tedious ego trip.

The film on the other hand was much more entertaining IMO, although Margot Robbie probably had quite a lot to do with that.
Love WOWS. Great fun. 9/10 for me.

Margot Robbie is an 11/10.

Watched United 93 last night, enjoyed it. Was expecting it to be a bit of an American flag waver but portrayed just how much confusion there was on that day. Gripping in a simple raw way, a bit like spotlight. 7/10

Also watched mad max, just down right weird but some good bits to it, 5/10

Hail Ceaser

Not a Cohen Bros classic. Quality stuff but fell a little flat for me.

4/10

Room

Phew! Tough viewing, especially as a parent. Interesting study on relationships, development and some broader perspectives.

7/10

Source Code

Not as good as I remembered but still a solid movie. Bit silly in places but as usual Gyllenhaal manages to elevate the thing to a watchable level.

6/10

Is there a page that lists BAFTA best director winners in a simple list/text format?

Sausage Party....managed 20 minutes without raising so much as a titter.I don't find the use of the 'c' word humorous in any context so this film probably wasn't made for me.The concept had promise just very poorly executed in my opinion.Maybe if I'd stuck with it who knows.1/10

Jason Bourne....an overly long formulaic action thriller devoid of all thrills 5/10

Eddie The Eagle

Biopic lite of GB Olympic ski jumper.

Entertaining but didn't need to be a full film, could've easily covered the story in an hour on TV. Well done to the bloke though.

Hell or High Water. A modern western; very simple story, great lead acts (Chris Pine & Jeff Bridges), beautiful cinematography, awesome score (Nick Cave), very funny in places but equally violent in others. Desolate setting, ambiguous ending - LOVED it.
