I think we could all brainstorm ideas that would make an interesting movie.
Oldies can be great protagonists, but that only really works well on cheaper to produce character driven movies like Gran Turismo.
Space cowboys has had a couple of mentions. It is a film I really enjoyed, but if you look at the numbers (and that’s what the studio will do) it isn’t the sort of percentage return they would need to justify the $250m the new film will most likely cost (by the time you figure in advertising) they will be targeting $1b or so. In order to do that they need to make the new film have the broadest possible appeal.
The upshot will most likely be a young teen or early twenties team (diverse gender and racial types, but must include Chinese which will ultimately be pointless as the film will be banned in China due to its paranormal theme) in the central roles.
The focus will be on finding the original now retired ghostbusters to use their know how to fight a new ghost threat.
The original casts role will be as mentors and support, anything where Bill Murray doesn’t have to stand up. Blah, blah, blah something goes wrong landing the new team in mortal peril. Our original heros have to don the proton packs one last time to rescue the new team and save the day.(maybe with help from a spectral Egon)

To be clear. This isn’t the film I want, but the one I think we will get.
Make the new team late twenties or older and that could work.

Just a reminder that the originally planned Ghostbusters 3, before it got replaced by Feig's drivel, was also supposed to be an "handover" movie I believe.

so I don't think we'll see a monster budget, I'd guess at around $100million. .
The rule of thumb is marketing is the same again, so even at that low level it will need to make approx. $400m just to break even, and that without the Chinese market. Also studios don't aim to break even.

A $100 million outlay would require 200 million to break even. For SOny to get good return (they take roughly half of domestic and a 40ish% of foreign), it'd need to have strong domestic takings. It'd all depend on if it was good or not....however, considering how there is this wall of hate now being genuinely directed at GB3 (as opposed to the made up shizzle at GB2016), that could actually help takings. Who knows by how much. I also think it's logical that thanks to GB2016, this next one (as the vid below says) will be monitored closely and budgets will be adhered to. As will Dan and Ivan's guidance.

Midnight has just released a brilliant editorial for GB3. I didn't know GB was released same weekend as Gremlins!

The stuff with Ackroyd is excellent. He was clearly rankled by Feig's incompetence.

I'm sure I'll get abuse from the fan boys for this but I quite enjoyed the latest film. Yes it was fluff but who cares?

The original ones were pretty poor too without the rose tinted goggles

You, sir, are quite clearly insane. There was nothing remotely poor about the first movie.

Have you or any member of your family ever been diagnosed schizophrenic or mentally incompetent...

I think we've found Paul Fieg's PH account.

yes

Totally non-scientific test. My 11-year-old daughter watched both the remake and then the original shortly afterwards. Her verdict - the original she would watch again and again, the remake was 'boring' and 'stupid'.

I watched the Rogan podcast with Dan Ackroyd, and he mentioned Bill hadn't committed to the film yet, and I thought, 'OK, I hope he does.'
I didn't know that filming had started and wraps in October. A video by Midnight's Edge lays it out.
