Films I watched this week
Discussion
Watched a couple lately,
Jackie - About Mrs Kennedy just after the assassination of her husband. Well acted, but a good insight into those days behind the closed doors of the White House. Not sure how accurate it all was but she came across as a very stong woman. 6.5/10 (Just a PH observation, Portman's accent in the movie reminded me of the girl who rides with John Candy in his BMW in Speed Zone/Cannonball Run 3...which was a little off putting).
Moonlight - Went into this blind, and it was not what I was expecting. First two chapters were good, last one ruined it for me 4.5/10
Hacksaw Ridge - Good war movie and that its based on a true story is almost too hard to believe. Not the same polished finish of Saving Private Ryan but the best of the bunch. 7.5/10

Passengers - pretty good for the most part. 7/10 Had read the spec script before watching.

Dubious morals behind story.
That is actually part of the concept - that someone does a pretty horrible thing for selfish reasons, and eventually gets to deal with the consequences.generationx said:
A diverting couple of hours but the ending seemed to be a bit of an afterthought.
The ending in the film is weak. The original ending as written is mentioned on the Passengers thread and would have been much better. In the film is was all a bit 'meh' and just peters out while the other one had a strong bit of 'oh st!' to it. No reason they couldn't have gone with it apart from maybe the tone they wanted. Only a couple of tweaked scenes needed earlier in the film to support it. Centurion07 said:
AS and GG are good, above average, but not 8/10 material.
Anyway, my latest one was Oculus -a low budget horror film about an evil mirror and financed by WWE Studios. Sounds like a recipe for disaster but it was actually rather well done, relying more on building tension than cheap jump scares. Throughout the film it switches constantly between the present day and the past, often mid scene. Far from jarring it works surprisingly well as a plot device, resulting in a decent little film
7/10

that's the thing though isn't it... you've got (what, 50 years?) on your own. No human company. You would, I should think, go mad. Taken in that context you could argue that his actions, although selfish, were totally understandableColonial said:

Lots of pretty dark concepts but it was filmed a bit 'light'
- The idea of waking up and fairly early on working out you are stuck, alone, and going to die that way even if you live out a full life
- Waking up someone else and condemning them to a similar fate, hoping they don't find out what you did
- Someone else wakes up who has lived out a very long life as crew on these journeys, knows how stuffed they are, and then dies a painful death from being woken up incorrectly (lucky it hadn't happened to the other two!)
- The original ending: when they reset the ship *everyone else is killed* by being ejected into space and they are really stuck alone. Though they do grow much more than a garden for the end.

I watched iBoy last night which is a 'Netflix original' film.
A teenager get's shot and bits of his mobile phone get lodged in his brain, giving him superpowers.
Yes, it sounds ridiculous - but actually it was a really good British movie.
8/10
