It's a strange thing downs.
I get the feeling they are going through the motions, saying what they think they should and doing what they think they should. But I wonder if the cognition has any depth if that's the right term.
I hope it does.
I work with a woman whose partner is a carer for people who have Downs, I have asked her all this sort of thing before. Her partner's opinion was that it's generally just them going through the motions, they have the basic understanding of how to start a relationship but for them, it's all about jumping through the hoops and getting that sense of accomplishment - the other person in the relationship, and whether they really like them or not is lower on the list of concerns. They can form proper loving relationships (as much as their mental capacity can allow) over longer periods, but sharing a can of sprite and then saying they're girlfriend and boyfriend, to us it's quite clear that their feelings for one another are secondary to their will to be in relationship.I get the feeling they are going through the motions, saying what they think they should and doing what they think they should. But I wonder if the cognition has any depth if that's the right term.
I hope it does.
I also asked whether or not they're allowed to have sexual relationships - consent and whether or not they have the capacity to understand it is a thorny issue, especially with less mentally competent ones.
This kid has been bombed 'oot, looks devo.
