Watched Spies Like Us the other night (Chevy Chase & Dan Aykroyd)

They just dont make good slapstick comedy films anymore. Possibly due to the talent not being there.

Simon Pegg is as close as I can get to a current comedy talent

Recently. not this week.

Ex machina. Interesting. Slow burner. Worth watching. I'm not really into sciFi, but it all seems plausible to me. Probably slightly unsatisfying, because you wonder what happened to Caleb and to Ava in the future. Lined up for a Sequel? Probably not. 6.5/10

Mi5

I liked it. Not a classic. But the chases scenes were plausible. Obviously, noticed the BMW product placement. Shame about the girl in the shop at the beginning frown Little hottie!

7.4/10

Then American. Nice lil modern spy thriller. Nice lil type of it's genre, not mind blowing, it lags a little in the middle, but overall a nice experience. I think modern Bond films could learn a little from it.
Do you mean "The American"? The George Clooney movie? If so, I love that film, but its the polar opposite of Bond!

(the girl in it is stunning)
The American is one of my favourite sleeper/under the radar films that is a lot better than the IMDB rating suggests.

Hardly any buzz about it, small cast, just a great little film where you get drawn into the character and the situation in a much more realistic and empathic way than you do for say a Bond film.

If you vaguely recognise the woman from it, she's actually the daughter and spitting image of the Italian actress who played Al Pacino's squeeze when he was also the 'american' hiding out in Italy in The Godfather.
The American is cracking film and I echo all the praise above.

The cinematography and pace are both spot on, and the scene when they're testing the gun in the is sexy and tension filled!

Just watched Magnolia. Its been years but its still IMO a great film to showcase proper actors actually 'acting'. It has outstanding performances from the whole cast, and I struggle to think of a film that compares

Yup, did John Wick last weekend. Good enough to watch from start to finish and was what it said on the tin so no complaints really. Fair 6.5/10.

Also took in Terminator Genisys. Read a bit about it before hand on imdb etc and have to agree with most that it has a few holes and in the end I just gave up trying to make good of the plot and watched it because I had to pay for it. I liked a few nods to the original terminator but I think enough is enough now. 6/10

So, last and probably least of the weekends action fest, Jurassic World. Done to death now, script written by a 12 year old and not a good one. 4/10 at best.
Also watched John wick a couple of weeks ago, great action movie, hard to believe it's a 15 rating given the violence.

Just watched whiplash, superb performances. The best film I've seen this year.

Spectre Never really liked the Bond movies since Daniel Craig took over, he's a great Bond but the films have been poor, trying to be James Bourne.
This one is the worst of the lot. 1/10

It's a classic, I think the 80's had a certain innocence which lent itself well to making such comedies. Modern efforts are far more crude.

Would agree with this. Modern 'comedies' seem to derive their punchlines simply from saying f*** all the way through the film.

Difficult to think of any SNL types who I rate after the MIke Myers era. Tina Fey is very good, and I don't know is AMy Shuer is SNL.
The 40 Year OLd Virgin crew, they make comedies I like, I see them as the analogy to the Ackroyd/Chase/Murray et al crew of the 80s.

Warm Bodies. Watched it because it's zombie and because of the favourable mention above.
I had ignored it because from what I gather, Hoult is a prick. But it was actually really really good and brought something new to the zombie genre while also being rather funny/charming and executed decently.

What We do in the Shadows

A documentary style film following 4 vampires living together in New Zealand. We also get to meet a whole host of other undead as the film progresses.
It's well done and generally quite amusing with some proper laugh out loud and spit your drink out moments. I have a feeling it has a lot of in-jokes and genre tropes going on in the background that repeated viewings would reward.

I enjoyed it 7.5 bats

The American.

Really enjoyed it and was probably best thing I've seen George Clooney in.

There are some gems. In Bruges for black comedy and the totally underrated The Other Guys. For example.

not sure i agree with that and i found The Amercian just a bit too slow....the plot was pretty thin and there wasn't enough of much else going on to keep me enthused...

Fair points but it did seem to have a nice pace and a particularly good tension to it.

Agree. But I seem to recal the way he escaped the other hit men really annoyed me. Is that the one right at the beginning a hit man with sniper rifle perfect shot with no cover for his hit doesn't shoot when he stops to inspect footprints and why would he leave footprints anyway.
Then I remember being really annoyed by a scooter chase I think looney chases a hit man in a sat on a scooter.

and some improbable female hit woman being just as inept for some contrived reason

I also remember fit women topless a lot thought it was ok nothing special

Ah well,I agree with the positive post, one of my favourite of his films.

Not a thriller, but a well structured and shot film - I really enjoyed it.

The slow pace, for me, marked it out as something different, in a good way.

I've been having a bit of a film fest while the wife is away :

Dirty Harry - Original and best of the Dirty Harry films. I was very young, but I can remember the stir this film caused when it was first released and it still works. 9/10

Magnum Force - I remember this as a favourite DH film, but you know what's going to happen and I was a bit surprised to find out it didn't stand up as well as I expected. - 6/10

The Enforcer (Yes, I have the box set biggrin) - The one with Tyne Daley - I'd actually forgotten the plot of this film and thought it really good - I enjoyed it more than Magnum Force this time 'round. - 8/10

The Lincoln Lawyer - There was a time (not so long ago) when I wouldn't watch ANY film with Matthew Mcgonahhy (or whatever his name is!!!) in, but he's proved me wrong and I really enjoyed this film. If you've seen the recent Bosch series on Amazon, you'll recognise the style - 7/10

Rush - I know it divides opinion, but for me, this film really captures the Hunt vs Lauda period and the feeling of that season (which was probably when I was first really aware of F1). Some great performances (in re-watching, Hemsworth's performance seems better than I recalled, Brühl was good first time!) and the racing scenes (even with too much use of Cadwell Park and Brands for those familiar with them) were well done, exciting (I suspect even to non-Motor Racing fan), but not too OTT. - 8/10

Nowhere Boy - The story of John Lennon's teenage years - It was quite good and some of the performances were good, notably Julia (his estranged mother, played by Anne-Marie Duff), but it didn't really engage me the way I though it would - 6/10.

I just never really rated George Clooney as an actor, but just found The American grabbed my attention. Certainly not a action packed but I guess I just liked the pace?

The Hangover
Was on tv the other night - hadn't seen it before but was pleasantly surprised and laughed al the way through. Luckily the two sequels are on Amazon Prime so will be watching those next.

Lucy
Not bad as a mindless watch, bit like Limitless (which was better but had less Johansson).

Guardians of the Galaxy
Very cool and looking forward to a sequel
