Come off it, that Mexican bit was embarrassing, and not even funny.

Whether it is percieved to be funny or not, Ullevi's over the top Daily Wail style rant deserved a rasberry.

Don't trouble yourself Zaxxon, the day I need a talentless muppet like you to translate for me I'll PM you.

Needless to say, the only pathetic and sad thing around here is your self proclaimed talent of ESP. Your sad little dig at me is hopelessly wide of the mark.

I love Top Gear and watch it every week and I agree.
It isn't 'Political correctness gone mad' or 'Come on, get a sense of humour. He was only joking.'

It was a pretty direct and savage attack on mexicans. What if he had been talking about african people and said 'African cars are just going to run on watermelons and chicken, be aids infected and steal things.'

There's little difference. They're both seriously stupid stereotypes and some of them were very vindictive.

Calling the whole mexican race 'feckless'.. Not on.

Agreed there and I am hardly PC

It was if he was trying to out JC JC without realising that a quick throwaway remark (all Lorry drivers murder prostitutes for example) is funny but a long drawn out rant can just seems a bit bitter and over the top.

Quoted from Wikipeado'

"In 1999, the Cartoon Network ceased to air Speedy Gonzales. In an interview to Fox News on March 28, 2002, Cartoon Network spokeswoman Laurie Goldberg commented, "It hasn't been on the air for years because of its ethnic stereotypes." This is widely believed to refer to Speedy's fellow mice, who are all shown as being very slow and lazy, and sometimes even appear intoxicated. This is particularly true of Speedy's cousin, Slowpoke Rodriguez, who is exceptionally slow and lazy. Slowpoke is also known to carry a gun.[2]

In Gonzales' Tamales, the town mice instigate a feud between Speedy and Sylvester the Cat because Speedy has been stealing the hearts of all the females. Much of the dialogue between Mexican characters is in English and the small amount of Spanish that peppers the dialogue consists of basic greetings, goodbyes, exclamations, and misplaced references to popular Mexican foods. This criticism prompted Cartoon Network to largely shelve Speedy's films when it gained exclusive rights to broadcast them in 1999. However, fan campaigns to put Speedy back on the air and lobbying by the League of United Latin American Citizens saw the shorts return to air from 2002.[3] Despite the controversy in the USA, Speedy Gonzales remains a very popular character in Latin America. In Mexico, the Speedy Gonzales show has been on and off part of the regular programing of Televisa's Canal 5 national channel ever since it was created."

One is a non factual, light entertainment joky programme with a few silly characters in it. The other one is a cartoon.
Doubt the people of Mexico will give a st about the comments of a silly car tv show host with small man syndrome a girly hairstyle.

^This.

Hammond is the worst thing about Top Gear. I can't stand the vain little dwarf with his posing and ****-poor attempts at humour.

Tonight's version was edited.

Oddly they cut out the part where JC comments about the Ambassador not watching but left in Hamster's rant.

No, you choose.

Or are you a little too thick to work out the meaning through context?

You have to resort to some on-line thesaurus or acronym resource, do you? Makes you look clever, does it?

Seems like I've touched nerve with my attack on the Top Gear fun boy three. Diddums.

Never mind,eh. Needless to say, you haven't got a clue, so I suggest you crawl back under whichever rock you slinked out from under.

Seriously, you haven't got a clue.

Seems that some people have watched and rewatched the Mexican bit, I couldnt even remember who said what, however found it all amusing if somewhat surprising and not over the top, but there we are.

I'd guess the BBC lawyers gave it a once over beofre broadcast.

Granted, the latest Top Gear controversy is hardly the greatest crime against humanity but IMO RH and to a lesser degree JC crossed the line from coarse non-PC banter to xenophobic stereotypism.

What may have been acceptable in the 1950s or 1960s, whenever Speedy Gonzalez was produced and aired is not so acceptable in 2011, although if what you've culled from wikipedia is correct there is still a place for it.

I accept that TG is just a bit of a lark, but it doesn't take much empathy to realise that some, perhaps not all, Mexicans may take offence at RH's ignorant diatribe. The Mexican Ambassador seems not to have been terribly impressed by it, and as a representative of the Mexican Government, and by extension of the Mexican people, in the UK, he knows whether he and other Mexicans found the comments on TG offensive or not.

In the end, this sad episode just reflects dimly on two of TG's presenters, especially the one with the girly hair style and small man syndrome, as you put it.

Let's have a bit of perspective for a moment.

Top Gear rip the piss out of Audi drivers, BMW drivers, American / Australian car manufacturers and drivers, hillbillies, bankers, each other, politicians, actors, gay people, women, slow boring cars / drivers, people carriers, Morris Marinas and the owners club, Reliants and their drivers, gypsies, religion, the BBC, Fifth Gear, TVRs, short people, tall people bald people, hairy people, beards - pretty much everything, and many things which I resemble. *

Without this, there is no show. We are back to Noel Edmunds car reviews. To address one element is simply not fair. They do not portray specific 'isms, they seem to be have something against everyone. So, it's the old story. Whingers deploy PCness when it suits the downtrodden individual and laugh / tolerate the other stuff. There is a word for it, I will leave it to someone else to raise it.

I'd just prefer to have am open sense of humour and recognise that this programme, like many others is totally irreverant, and is likely to offend some people. Personally, I wouldn't have it any other way. I despise PC hand wringers unless the jibe is obviously venomous. With heavy irony, I want people to stop attacking my apparent minority standing of being non PC as long as you have a go at everyone, and I am offended by PCness against that and may make a complaint (now sort out that paradox). Will someone take up our cause to defend our diminishing rights...

In this country, we used to have the ability to laugh at ourselves and others. We seem to have lost that joy.

Let them complain. Ignore them. Move on to the next victims. Laugh lots in the TG office at the obvious misreading of the broadcast content by the hand wringers.

  • edit, sorry, I forgot Mexicans, didn't want to offend them or any other groups by exclusion. E&OE.
