American Hustle - 8/10, watched in the same week as the VERY disappointing Wolf On Wall Street. Was so much better than Scorcece's mess.

John Wick

I would have to compare this with Taken, The Equalizer, The Prince, and Jack Reacher. All seem to have indestructable lead characters out to carve their way through the bad guys.

When I saw the adverts for this film, I had hopes that there might be some depth to the story but there really isn't so although I was slightly disappointed in that regard, it is a good film within the genre.

7/10 - I nearly marked it down further because of the dog. I didn't like that but appreciate what a great motivator it was.

In Her Shoes

Another one watched with my wife. She thought it was good but slow. I thought there was some fun humour but found it hard to like any of the characters. Cameron Diaz may have been the star but she was the most unlikeable. The story is supposed to be about her redemption really but I didn't find myself cheering for her - her turn-around didn't feel as though it wiped her slate clean.

4/10

Fury

What is it about American films these days? In their efforts to give characters moral ambiguity, I feel as though they have simply made them unlikable and entirely unsympathetic. Brad Pitt's character was just a bully in this film, and didn't deserve the young recruit's respect at the end. It didn't feel earned to me. It didn't feel as though his earlier actions should have been forgotten so readily. Maybe I hold a grudge too long. People have commented about this in the past.

And talking about "the kid"... he appeared to turn from timid to war hero too quickly. Maybe this the confines of a 2 hour film force this transition to happen too quickly?

All that said, the film was wonderfully shot with incredible attention to detail (some licence here and there regarding the tanks and their capability of withstanding shell-fire), and it was the first time since just after WWII where a genuine Tiger was used in a film - the very last working Tiger too.

Oh, and I loved the effects showing the speed, power and trajectory of the heavy artillery. That gave some impression of what you would be up against in a similar situation - terrifying.

Its downloadable on the torrent sites.
It's not out on DVD yet, isn't it? Are they still only camera copies?
It came out in America last October but is delayed over here until April if I remember correctly.
There are high quality rips online or at least I assume that's where my pal got his copy from.

Out of the recent movies we watched, John Wick and The Guest will be what I want to see in the cinema.

It's been cold out and the car is off the road so been ploughing through movies! I don't like giving /10 ratings as they are too general. Recently I've seen:

Birdman was long and boring and I'm sure will take a couple of watches "to get". Felt like a poor Fight Club.

Whiplash was a slow burner but once it got going was more gripping.

Fury was a great start but then became stupid with the final fight sequence making no sense (they [the Nazis] were carry anti-tank launchers and then they have to unpack them later to finish of the crew - lowat)

The Guest - GREAT soundtrack (very Drive-esque). The structure is that of a horror film but it unfolds as a psychological thriller paying homage to a lot of the old action films and cliches (the same that Drive does with 70/80s car/crime films).

The Babadook - great little independent style movie from Australia. Really Creepy!

Poker Night - Cool ensemble cast with a timeline that jumps around the place but an intriguing watch.

Nightcrawler - A rolercoaster of a ride to watch. Powerful performances.

Housebound - a black comedy from Australia again about a chick who is on house arrest and her struggles with her family who are adamant that their house is haunted. Think Shaun of the Dead meets The Others but down under.

That's me done for a while. Time to read some books!

Anyone mentioned Big Hero 6 yet? went to see it as premiere a couple of weeks back, cinema didn't really advertise it so there was about a dozen of us had the place to ourselves. Pretty good, the deflation bit was brilliant. The ending had my youngest and the wife in tears then all happy again smile
I think it's being premiered again this weekend as she won tickets to go see it again this morning?

A bit late with this one, but X-men days of future past isn't bad at all. Much, much more enjoyable than a few previous ones. 7/10

The Man Who Crossed Hitler.

A bit of the story of Hans Litten who grilled Hitler on the Witness stand. A rather fascinating story
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Litten

For A BBC drama it was quite good 7/10 I would liked to have seen more of what happened towards the end and Hitlers revenge.

Mystery Road.

7/10 for a slow burning but excellent drama with (unpleasant) racial undertones.

Some plot holes but filmography and the slow pace made up for these.

Good film.

Bit late to the party on this one, but I watched Guardians of the Galaxy today and absolutely loved it.

Also, Apollo 13 was on SyFy earlier today and I ended up watching it (despite having watched it several times before, and owning it on BD). What a great film.

Whiplash, excellent film although if you don't like jazz and jazz drum solos you may disagree. J.K. Simmons was particularly good.

Whiplash

I don't like jazz and don't really care for drumming.

But fk me this was fantastic. Really was such a fantastic movie, J.K Simmons absolutely stole the show - he was fantastic. I hope he gets best supporting actor, he deserves it.

9/10

walking among the tombstones – 7/10 Liam Neeson plays a private detective working on behalf of drug dealers who’s wives have been murdered due to their life of crime.
Really enjoyed it to be honest. Dark at times but nothing too horrifying. Definitely worth a watch.

The detox has allowed me to watch a few movies of late,

American Sniper - Well acted, not as great imo as people are making out though. Not bad, but not amazing. 6.5/10
Birdman - Some brilliant performances by Keaton & Norton, pretty weird but light enough to entertain. 7.5/10
Foxcatcher - Didn't really connect with this movie, way too slow. 6/10
Kajaki - Another war movie, this one was good, pretty graphic too. 7.5/10
Imitation Game - A war time movie in this case, which I thought was brilliant. 9/10
Unbroken - yes, there is a theme here, not bad at all, I think its Jolie's debut as a director. Not bad 7.5/10
History of Violence - It was ok, there was nothing unexpected. 6.5/10

There was a war/historical theme to my movies, which all had text/images/original footage during the credits on how the true stories finished...in the war movie cases it usually takes away from the movie I feel. When asked about a movie like this, i always find myself discussing the ending in the description as it kind of stood out the most. Just an observation there...
