It should be Stephen Merchant, I remember Ian Fleming saying James Bond was originally written as being very tall and goggly eyed.

That would be genius!

Hardy was pretty much spot as his character in Inception I thought.
He'd have to lose some bulk though...

Isn't Tom Hardy covered in tattoos?
He is, but you wouldn't think so in his role as Bane, nothing a make up artist couldn't cover up.

His tattoos were CGI'd off as Bane, not covered in make up.

Tom Hardy would be a great Bond IMO but I think his height would hinder him, remember the bhing about Daniel Craig's height when it was announced he'd got the job?

One of the reasons Lewis Collins never got the role, but if Tom Cruise can play Jack Reacher... hehe

ROFL copters for those suggesting Harry Potter and McAvoy! WTF?! I really like Hardy but there is something not right about him for the role, doesn't look classy enough, even though i think he is an excellent actor.
Gotta go for someone who is currently a decade younger and isn't either typecast or widely known. I suppose its got to be someone who can look suave, the sort of guy who looks so good in a suit doing and saying nothing(why don't I look like that when I wear my suit?!) but can also have a right good scrap. I reckon Dustin Clare although I feel he has the look of Connery about him.

Wasn't Christian Bale mentioned for it previously? He's clearly already a brilliant actor and may be worth a shot at bond, although perhaps not "dark" enough.

As to some of the other names above
Tom Hardy - perhaps too young for it just yet
Fassbender/McAvoy - too small
Cumbernatch - not bond material
Damien Lewis - ginger
Idris Elba - black

I think Christian Bale would be great as the next bond. Hugh Jackman might be alright... but he's an Aussie, so that's sacrilege. Henry Cavill - maybe, will reserve judgement until I've seen him in Man of Steel.

Surely, as long as you can look good in a suit, at least 6 foot and can act, you'd be a great James Bond. Idris Elba would be a good choice for me, as would Fassbender.

Fassbender = quintessential Englishman with acting ability. Oh I guess that rules him out then.

There's a certain irony there... wink

I like the idea of Fassbender. But it's very subjective as we all bring our own interpretation of what Bond ought to be.

FWIW....

Connery - The Standard that all must be judged by. A bit too smooth and self satisfied, not quite ragged enough and went on a bit too long.
Lazenby - So hard to tell with only one film, but the potential was huge. Massively underrated.
Moore - Even smoother and more of a caricature than Connery - better in his early films, but far too entertainment orientated.
Dalton - Just wrong. Too much angst, no poise. He probably had a rough deal following Moore and dealing with the material thrown at him, but it just didn't work for me.
Brosnan - For me, the worst of the lot. Everything that Bond shouldn't be. Preening, self satisfied, smug and a pouting poseur.
Craig - A big improvement. Not a fan of how he carries himself - too much swagger, but much more damaged goods.

I think Fassbender could play the Bond I've always hoped for - a rougher, raw contradiction that should inevitably be inherent in one who kills for a living. Vigour alongside weariness. etc.

MI5 has a much broader intake these days and Bond needs to reflect that.
