Because it's true to the book, you dolt! rolleyes
Also, nature tends to know best. Billions of years of evolution gave birds and insects wings not rotor blades, the motion is more efficient but very subtle and complex. Until relatively recently according to mathematical modelling, Bumble Bees couldn't fly! So if a future engineer could create mechanical dragonfly wings it would probably be more efficient and flexible than a helicopter.

Er, no. No it would not be more efficient.

My main problem with the film was its slowness....

Does it matter? It is as much part of the lore as Guild Heighliners, sand crawlers, suspensors, personal shields, and Stillsuits. It's part of the tech of Dune.

To *not* have ornithopters would make it a less faithful adaptation.

If they didn't have the dragonfly wings they wouldn't be able to fly. It's a different planet and helicopters hadn't been invented there.

Oh well that's that proven. FFS.

Hang on...

Er, yes it would!

Helicopters are very inefficient, it's why we don't use them if we can use a plane. The advantages of the helicopter lie in being capable of hovering and landing and taking off from small areas (like oil platforms) If it was possible to engineer an "Ornithopter" of the size depicted it is pretty much a given that it would out perform a helicopter in all circumstances. The military want to use small unmanned ornithopters for surveillance work as they would look like birds, indeed such devices have been used successfully to monitor bird populations without disturbing the subjects.

FFS! It’s a science fiction film! It’s set in the year 10191; how can you possibly be having an argument about the technical validity of ornithopter wings? rofl

A few years the PH cognoscenti didn’t even think SpaceX could land a booster. Ever.

hehe

It was just Ayahuasca trying to save face for a faux pas in the same order of magnitude as saying that the first Lord of the Rings film was stupid because they use swords and bows when guns and guided missiles are better. wink

Fact is that it doesn't matter whether ornithopter wings are better or not; that's the tech they use in Dune.

Had Denis Villeneuve decided to use helicopters instead, we would now be discussing what a pile of ste the film is for getting that so wrong. The only reason we let the David Lynch film get away with fixed wing fliers is because we know the SFX of the time wasn't capable of depicting an orni. Much like the 1953 version of War of the Worlds had to use flying war machines for the Martians as they didn't have the SFX tech to depict tripod walkers.

Didn't they ultimately come from Earth though?

Maybe rotating high precision parts have trouble with all the sand and elastomeric hinges are lower maintenance?

The biggest thing to complain about is that its only part 1 and they don't know if part 2 will be coming out.

This one I believe covers up to the death of Paul Atreides and ends before he truly becomes Muad'Dib

Has anyone read the books?

It couldn't possibly be worse, even if it stars Jar Jar Binks.

Which is a great way of ensuring that the second half of the story doesn’t get made; they will need box office revenue. Get down to your local cinema.

Whoever posted that ^^^ up there about “Paul Atreides dies”. - you what?!? confused This film covers the first half of the Dune novel. Paul does not die in Dune.

Sensible

The book is too big for a single film.

Unfortunately I can see this flopping at the box office. My Vue currnetly only has it on its small screens and when I speaks to people about it none of them are aware of it not planning to see it.

I’m hopefully going this weekend and looking forward to it!

Has anyone not read the books? I mean, it gets a bit weird around god-emperor, but the first 3 are essential reading for even a vague interest in sci-fi

I found the first book bloody hard work actually, I dont mind the first film, for its day it was fairly revolutionary, and the basics are there, but it was massively troubled.

Releasing it is one thing, making it is another.

I assume they know what they're doing, but the idea of gathering up all those sets, actors and technicians from several years ago from scratch again to film the same type of stuff you've already filmed seems pretty far out to me.

There aren't many films that have been made back to back, but this feels like the world's most obvious candidate.

From what i gather this film is rather good. I don't see it making it's money, but I'll contribute.
