Films I watched this week

Star Wars 7 - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2488496
It's a lot jazzier and slicker than the original films, seemed a little hollow too but perhaps I'm a bit old for this sort of thing, that said I enjoyed it, it looked great, there are some nice bits in it, the light sabre fighting was great as is the new droid. I think the planned sequels will need to be really something to give this one longevity.
7/10

I can understand that issue. An over-reliance of tech and a too urgent need to push the story along perhaps? It's a lot jazzier and slicker than the original films, seemed a little hollow too but perhaps I'm a bit old for this sort of thing, that said I enjoyed it, it looked great, there are some nice bits in it, the light sabre fighting was great as is the new droid. Ex Machina - Computer Programmer wins staff lottery and gets to spend a week with the company boss at his secret place in the mountains. The boss has a new toy, a female looking robot with Artificial Intelligence. I really liked this one, it could quite easily be converted to a play as there are few characters and locations. The acting was good especially from the boss who really was an annoying ahole. 8/10
Chappie
Such a frustrating film. I've really enjoyed Blomkamp's stuff so far because although they're flawed, it still feels like there's real enthusiasm and creativity at the heart of his film making. They don't have that cynical, box-ticking sense that runs through most Hollywood stuff these days.
This one could have been great and I can forgive some of the plot holes and contrivances, but I couldn't forgive one major thing: Chappie is such an annoying prick.

I watched Toy Story 3 over the weekend. I've seen the first 2 but have never got round to watching this one (but wanted to).
Utterly brilliant - I really enjoyed it. It was a lovely bittersweet conclusion to the story. I really hope they leave it there and don't make the rumoured Toy Story 4.

I also watched Rise of the Guardians which was on BBC One just before Toy Story 3. It was an enjoyable kids film and perfect hangover fodder whilst laid out on the sofa feeling sorry for my overindulgence the night before.
I watched "Non Stop" when it was on the other day, Liam Neeson on a hijacked airliner. Not terrible, though not really all that much to it. Put me off a little as he's getting on the plane when a young girl drops what is obviously a Paddington Bear toy, he takes it to her and asks her what it's called. I forget what ridiculous name she'd given it, but all I could think was if they can't get Paddington's name right, what else will be wrong?

The Lone Ranger; can't believe I've seen it 3 times now as I originally thought it was alright but not worthy of a re-watch, but each time I've liked it a little bit more. Running time is far too long but otherwise it's an enjoyable caper. 7/10
Saw it on the weekend. I wasn't expecting much as the reviews weren't kind, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was good fun and although I doubt I'd watch it again, I enjoyed it at the time. It certainly didn't deserve the pasting it got from the critics.Watched Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi over the weekend to remind myself before I go and see the new one at some point.
I was surprised how rubbish some of the special effects they inserted in the re-release versions look, and regarding earlier conversations on here, on the 0 to Jar-Jar annoyance scale the Ewoks hardly show up.

Was going to post in the dedicated Star Wars thread but its a geekfest arguing over light sabre continuity!
Star Wars 7: the force awakens
left the missus at home and got into kid mode and thorough enjoyed it, some nice nods to previous films, and on the right side of the reverence and respect/sickly homage spectrum, some nice moments of humour, and great action scenes far outweigh the feeling of repetition (especially the final battle)
Also thought the new actors were very good (no Hayden Christensen clunkers here) and cameos by the old cast
a solid 8/10 for entertainment
