I am aware there is already a thread on this, but it seems to contain spoliers

So just a quick question

I have only just discovered this, I am halfway through Season 1 and I am really enjoying it, but I am not creaming over it like I have seen some people do

It has some great moments, does it build and build?

I won't be upset if it doesn't I just want to know where to set my expectation level

If it helps I am currently at the bit where Omar has just shot the guy (Stinky?) from the doorway and they almost got shut down after pulling the Senators driver but the judge pulled rank

Definitely a slow burner, but well worth sticking with it.

If you can appreciate it already then 'you're in' - just stick with it will continually develop the characters.

Stick with it, series one ends explosively (watched 1.13 last night for the 2nd time).

Ok, series 2 is not the greatest of the bunch IMHO as focus moves away from 'the game' and towards another group but still heavily features the Barksdale Crew.

But series 3 is probably the best of the 5.

In series 1 the main players are McNulty, Stringer and Avon - Omar is in a supporting role really, but as the show progresses he takes a more promiant part of the story and arguebly steals the show.

Hopefully without spoiling it at all, later on in the show he gets an equally good opponent. An almost complete opposite, but shares a few traits. Their exchanges are some of the best bit of TV I’ve ever seen.

Bear in mind it is one case filmed over 13 episodes, rather than the crash-bang-wallop of other shows where you get one case an episode.

You get so drawn in, you feel every pain, every frustration and most of all every little success that the detectives do.

It's also not trying to be anything other than realistic, which frankly in homicide means a lot of boring donkey work, a bit of luck and a little excitement.

Character development is unrivalled though.

McNulty gets the great lines, but Freamon is the man.

You can either get it on DVD I believe or perhaps, umm other means? Maybe you have a friend who could 'lend' it to you?

After reading this I'm going to watch through the whole five seasons again I think. I was thinking the same as you OP when I started it, yeah it was good but didn't see what all the fuss was about, by the middle if the first season I was totally hooked. On a couple of occasions I stayed up way too late watching 'just one more episode'.

Think my favourite character is Bunk, although Omar is a very close second.

BBC2 aired all 5 series consecutively over a few months last yr. dvd is your best bet.

the wire series' are like a good book. takes a while to familiarise yourself (particularly the gang speak) but when you do, you want to start from the beginning and can't wait for the next one. stands up very well to repeat viewing.

Along with The Soprano's, The Wire is the best TV I've seen.

I'm going to avoid seeing any of the Wire for the next 5 years or so just so I can watch it all again.

Waiting for the entire Sopranos to come out on Blu Ray before I watch that all again.
