Fortitude - plot discussion thread - SPOILERS ARE IN HERE!
Discussion
A thread for those of us who have watched all of S2, but can't wait another 10 weeks for everybody else to catch-up before it can be discussed on the other thread!
WARNING -this thread contains plot discussion and spoilers
I watched the final episodes last night. A few observations and questions...
1. The castration scene is probably the most graphic and intense scene I have ever watched on TV in my 40yrs on this planet. I've heard people ask if it was really required, but although it was difficult to watch I think the way it was executed was incredible and added totally to the plot and realism.
2. Why did Monk allow himself to be injected, when it was quite obvious that the 'bent' scientists couldn't be trusted?
3. Although it wasn't shown I'm assuming Freya actually died, signified by Ingrid meeting Michael on the steps of the house when he came back with Eric after shooting the corrupt medical person?
4. When Vincent was in the tent and he went blind, it was unzipped by a figure that stared him directly in the face (which he confused to be Natalie), was that the same Russian female soldier that attacked Michael and who he shot?
5. The final scene with Dan and Petra was a great ending, and sets up a S3 (hopefully!). I found Petra's acceptance of Dan's physical and mental changes quite endearing, the scriptwriters made sure she remained unphased in front of him, which I think kept her safe from him, so far...
As I said on the main thread, I think S2 was epic, easily as good as S1 if not better because of the faster pace.
I also enjoyed the one liner comments that were designed to inject humour.
Stars of S2 for me were Richard Dormer and Ken Stott, both were sublime.

Thanks for starting this thread.
I agree about Season 2 being better than Season 1. Both are similar to Got that you really shouldn't get attached to any character.
It seemed to go a bit astray in the middle part, but towards the end it really was a good thing to have it all available and downloaded for the binge watch 'just another episode then will go to bed' mode.
To comment on your question / comments.
1. Castration scene, yes very graphic, difficult to watch, but done well, not strictly necessary but showed the lengths that the Shaman was prepared to go. I thought it might be towards some final attempt to cure Freya.
The scene that had me cringing was near the end when Dennis Quaid went out on the skidoo on his own after the Doc said it was near the end for Freya, saw the incoming storm, I think that was the trigger, pitched his tent and then sat outside playing with the Magnum. Just expected eat a round any second.
2. Munk allowing himself to be injected, I think this was because he was a bit thick, just did as he was told. Completely manipulated and way over his head. Not sure about Ken Stott casting, his accent was terrible, almost as bad as Dick van Dyke's cockney accent in Mary Poppins. But his acting otherwise was first rate.
3. Freya, agreed, she died I think, and as for Eric shooting the extraction agent, who'd a thunk Eric could sort of be last man standing.
4. The person in the goggles unzipping the tent, dunno, I'd lost the plot a bit by then.
5. Dan and Petra, at one point I got to wondering if she was a fiend as she seemed so accepting. Yes I think Dan is back, properly back, but on terms with the changes to him and ready for dealing for whatever is coming in season 3 from the Russian side. Complete guess.
Other things, favourite character Dan, but quite liked the comedy one liners from the old guy with the Scottish accent who was the townhall receptionist guy, can't remember his name. Also the snow plough guy, who played Ubba in Last Kingdom.
I now want to go polar bear watching on Svalbard.
Slight bit of rivet counting, but I know that extraction team's Nissan Patrol had an eff off bull bar on the front but after knackering that police Scooby in the side I'd have expected a bit more damage than a broken spotlight lens.

Was the guy who came into Vincent's tent the same person who you saw looking through binoculars and talking about the polar bears and reindeer, then took down the binoculars and had no eyes? Or was he the guy that had been experimented on in the old film reel?
I may be wrong, but I think it was the same person, but it was the Russian female soldier who Michael shot?!?pidsy said:
Why did khatri get a sudden dose of remorse? She didn't waver through the whole thing then blew up the chopper. Was she going to be thrown out of it?
My take on it was she was a dedicated scientist (as per her dialogue about working for tone reason only), but the realism/brutality of the extraction team punching Vincent was one step too far for her. She realised her own life would be in danger, hence swiping the flare gun just in case. She was right to do it because she was about to be thrown out of the helipcoter after being told to undo her belt etc.kmpowell said:

Additionally a bit of a rivet counting complaint from No1 daughter, a determined handbag freak. When Ingrid and Petra found Hilder's handbag in her car it wasn't the brown Mulberry that Ingrid liked so much, nor Petra's favourite the black Yves St Laurent. Women eh?

I have just finished watching series 2 of Fortitude. Hope there a series 3 to follow?
Part of me wants S3 and part of me doesn't. It's pretty harrowing to watch in places and much scarier than most TV stuff. I think I'm getting soft in my old age. If it does go to S3 I'm guessing the sheriff will now be the new governor which could make things pretty interesting.
SPOILER.
Hi. Please can someone explain why the shaman castrated himself?? It's baffling me!
And what did he do with his genitals??
I just finished watching series 2 yesterday & I'm still somewhat confused - enough to set up an account on this site!
It felt like there were storylines that changed or didn't get finished for some reason - hildur's phone; Vincent's blindness; Bianca's death; Freya setting fire to the effigy thing.
But I liked that this series seemed to take itself less seriously compared to series one.

Just finished it myself today.
I am a bit of a big girls blouse when it comes to scary stuff so its good to watch some scenes on fast forward.
I really enjoyed it. I thought Dan was coming back to his old self towards the end, just with super powers. The he bit the throat out of that chap. So much for my theory.
How did he get out of the coffin like box in the back of the car?

I thought the shaman was played very very well, and yes the castration scene to me,was kind of self evident(as well as being extremely well done) due to what the shaman says to Dan about Women during the trip,in the disused mines, prior to Freya setting the magnificent Tupilac alight, and about what he had learned of women, when he was much younger, and destined to become a Shaman.
I'm personally so bored of frontal male nudity being this totally outdated taboo, that this 2nd season of Fortitude handled brilliantly.
The idea that Reindeer Pee,is a Hallucinogen (and most certainly without fail NOT a Narcotic! - is my only major complaint about the screenplay, with Eric's character calling it a narcotic...insert facepalm) after the poor Reindeer are force fed the Fly Agaric (yes they can be classed as a Hallucinogenic (but ABSOLUTELY NOT in the way described/shown in Fortitude S2) mushroom, and it miraculously, after becoming the animals urine, that even Doctors of any training whatsoever would inject,is hugely laughable,if it weren't for the sad fact, that people catastrophically have been known to use this kind of misinformation as a new means for ingesting(especially by IV,or IM) such storyline fiction,as a possible fact, that can turn deadly (infection, septicemia et al) if used in the ways described, and shown as a recreational drug.
