Indeed.Though, if this follows the plot of the book much (and the first one did fairly well), it seems an odd choice as it's essentially part 2 of a story...

Never read the books, doesn't look likely either, and I normally don't enjoy Tom Cruise films.

I think the thing is that, at least for those who had previously read some or all of the books, the film was fine despite Cruise, however it would have been better if the title role had been cast with an actor of greater physical stature.
Names that spring to mind, Vince Vaughan, Billy Campbell, John Corbett, many other suggestions are possible. It should be someone significantly over 6 foot though.
