I was avoiding the obvious irony in the situation - but it is quite funny

After talking about income tax in the hypothetical I've been put into a situation where I have to make a decision about what I'm going to do.

Having some restructuring at work and I've been offered a promotion that's going to be based in Brighton. I can still mostly work from home but I will be required in the office occasionally. The salary increase will take me into the higher tax rate in Scotland but not England, so do I move to Brighton bearing in mind that housing costs are looking to be double what I pay here or stay, pay the higher tax on a little of my salary and put up with a long commute a couple of times a month?

I'm leaning towards the latter at the moment.
Congrats on the promotion and hope whatever you do it works out for you smile

It’s a non-brainer given your stated views; stay in Scotland and be proud to be one of those with broad shoulders who contribute to a fair and progressive society…..
Indeed - After the position that ZL has repeatedly taken over Scottish tax differences, it would be incredibly hypocritical to then avoid the tax himself (either by moving, or by contributing to a pension etc).....That has made me chuckle

p.s. congrats on the promotion / opportunity.
I posted because I thought it would get a laugh. I'm almost certainly not moving to Brighton, fk getting bumped to the bottom of the ADHD diagnosis waiting list again laugh

Ah yes, the humble crofter. I recall Greg Hands commenting on this claim back in the day by saying ‘I had a career in the City and I don’t recall him being a simple crofter at that time. Maybe that was his codename on his Bloomberg terminal as he was buying and selling financial assets.’

There was also, of course, the humble crofter's penchant for a fleet of his & hers Range Rovers, perfectly adapted for the rural crofting life - especially the convertible Evoque, great for transporting ewes to the mart on a Tuesday morning in open topped luxury. This was a view not universally shared by his humble crofting neighbours, who inexplicably found that their own humble crofting toil was unable to sustain such largesse on so grand a scale, and caused some to postulate the almost inconscionable possibility that Mr Bloatfud may potentially be moonlighting as something other than a humble crofter.

The man's been a charlatan and a fraud all his political career - what he and his supporters orchestrated against the honourable Charles Kennedy was nothing short of an outrage, yet because the egregious humble crofter wore a yellow rosette he could do no wrong in the eyes of the cult faithful.
Brilliant!, I would pay good money to watch Lord Baubleheid of Kilcharles read that.

Has anyone noticed a theme running in this thread... As soon as there is another prominent story being discussed there is usually
a sudden attempt to deflect from it. Wasn't it 'burger who was the master of that at one time?

Congrats on the payrise and non move. I never thought for a moment you would go to Brighton to avoid a bit of tax. Broadest shoulders bearing the burden etc.

Zedleg celebrates his pay rise.

This is how I always thought the fiscal drag policies at both Holyrood and Westminster would eventually unravel.
People like Robison and Osborne can go on about broadest shoulders can contribute a little more or only high earners paying the child benefit charge, which works when, for the majority, this just means “someone richer than you” but, as is happening increasingly, this actually starts to mean “you” as ZedLeg has been fortunate enough to discover, then the electorate’s view begins to change and there’s noises about Hunt doing something about the child benefit charge soon.

In saying that, I can see the SNP sticking to the current bands until electoral oblivion.

Missing the point somewhat?!

I would have surmised that a self-confessed Green voter would have jumped at the chance to move to the ONLY constituency in the UK represented by an elected member of that party...

PS. I am aware that Caroline Lucas is an actual Green and not a member of a party that uses the name but has been disenfranchised by the wider movement.

This has been a useful reminder. Need to estimate how much I need to stick in the pension to avoid the 52% nonsense.

Since moving to Brighton isn't an option for me either.

Anyone else finding the state of Glasgow's roads just appallingly bad this year? It's hard to stay out of potholes, ruts and sunken manhole covers in the dark evenings. Maintenance budget going south in line with the cooncil's finances?

She always reminds me of a maturer version of that vulcan woman from Star Trek Enterprise series.
I find her quite pleasant to look

Years of council tax freezes resulting in a reduction in local services shocker...

I was down seeing my parents in Edinburgh over the weekend and was shocked to see how many local recreation places are due to close now. I'm talking sports centres, swimming pools etc, what an utter farce.

Edited to add:-

Congrats on the promotion Zed, just whack the extra into your pension - every little helps when planning for the future thumbup

Ignoring the chucklesome irony of Zed's situation (sorry, but it just is), the practical approach is,

- Stay in Scotland if it suits you (living expenses are yours to bear)
- Travel to Brighton as required (work travel expenses are your employers' to bear)
- Put enough in your pension to bring you below the tax theshold.
- Join the dark side. wink

It does illustrate the insidious nature of the tax policies up here, and the steady creep from targeting the rich toary basturds, towards targeting quite ordinary middle earners. All the free sweeties have to be paid for somehow.

(and congrats to Zed on having a nice problem to have - far too much money biggrin)

Zed also needs to be careful with the cross border drugs differences. They're still illegal down sarf.

Have any of the M8 junctions reopened? I was down seeing bands a couple times in December and was impressed at how bloody difficult they'd made it to get a car back out of the city centre once you'd got there.

Good Spectator article about the SNP secret state. Nothing much new to us here but hopefully getting it out to a bigger audience.

"The clique that now runs Scotland is un-able to distinguish between the objectives of a political party and the proper conduct of government. "

A nice quote in it though

As the Scottish Lib Dem leader Alex Cole-Hamilton remarked: ‘Even Richard Nixon didn’t destroy the Watergate tapes.’
