I think most normal folk think it's over generous , sadly the people who have a magic friend and think money grows in a plate think the feckless work shy of london should continue to receive more benifits than an average working member of socity earns, maybe the clergy would like to make up the differnce!!! 60% god botherer tax anyone????

Classic post!

This is one of the seemingly unrelated issues (but clearly not in this case) this country needs to sort imho; how government and its decisions can be altered or scuppered by a coterie of unelected religious nutcases - with 'club' views on many issues - allowed to sit in the Lords.

Its the 21st C for someone-other-than-a-celestial-being's sake, if we need a second chamber/control over (elected) parliament it's high time we got rid of this archaic need to give the god botherers a place. Get em out!

The wife has just seen that item and is currently sitting on the sofa absolutely steaming. If that was a piece by the BBC to make us feel bad then it failed.
Why should she? She's not a mug. So long as it's being thrown at people, they will take it. Can they be blamed?
Of course not - when we've got a culture of MPs fiddling expenses and state owned banks paying bonuses, people on benefits are hardly likely to be keen to make sacrifices.

Good idea. Then we can *really* fk up our competitiveness.

FFS.
Not really, I thought that most people on the benefits were the unemployed with a few low paid scratching a living from cleaning, clearing type work.

Wow. Unelected peers meddling in the business of elected MPs is one thing, unelected peers who are commanded what to do by the voice God almighty... now that's something I didn't know about.

You've just described my senario, except I was made redundant in November. I get £70 per week in benefits, my out goings are just under 2k per month frown
So you get little more than an eighth of the suggested capped rate that, apparently, many benefits recipients exceed... how come?

This is both confusing and worrying - hearing all the benefits stories I'd think I should be OK if made redundant but then hearing from people like yourself rather takes away the (false?) confidence

Damnation - I did that too. Now looks like I'm stuck with it as those who've paid decades of tax and NI seem to get phucked. I guess if I'd have lounged on the dole since leaving school I'd be sorted and comfy!

It's telling that almost every single comment on the BBC website (yes the BBC!!!!) is pro the £26k cap. Labour may have messed up by insisting on a wrecking amendment. The Tories should stand firm on this - they are unambiguously in the right, and in line with public opinion. Parliament act, please, and another demolition of Millibean on PMQs.

Actually I made the mistake of having an offset mortgage. This means that I've been paying into the savings account rather than paying a bit off of the mortgage each month. If you have savings then you get pretty much nothing other than jobseekers.

On the upside I've found a job. nothing is signed yet, but the offer has been made. In the past months I've applied for around 500+ jobs so its been a lot of work smile

I thought with an offset mortgage you always looked massively overdrawn?

Would it bad if they all agreed with your own views on the matter?

On the Politics show today, the Labour peer had no answer to when the presenter mentioned the overwhelming support for it.

Oh I'm sure I'd be less put out by it, but I still don't agree with the principle. Tbh the thing that's surprised me is that I don't recall ever seeing the bishops in the Lords before. Of course that's not to say that they aren't usually there, simply that I don't recall seeing them in anything I've seen on the news before.

The public is clueless - that's why we have politicians (that hardly anyone bothers to vote for) to sort stuff out for us.

The public is clueless (when they disagree with you?). I prefer the dēmos in my democracy. I don't want politicians telling me what's right, they are not smarter than I am, they can be considered equally clueless as anyone. You mentioned that they are borderline corrupt with the expenses thing, you would rather take their opinion over the publics? The politicos are here to run things as we want them, not the other way around.

A lot of people agreed with poll tax, it didn't do Thatcher much good.
