As a Cornishman, I am not English and refuse to be bracketed as such.
As a Cornishman, you've been English for about a thousand years.
That's not the way we see it.
So do you refuse to use the public services provided by the Government and only use those that are provided and paid for by Cornwall? Or is it just a mindset?
Yes.
Is that yes, as in it's only a mindset, or yes as in you refuse to use public services paid for by the nation, as opposed to just Cornwall.

If it's the latter, can you really, honestly say you've never driven on a road in Devon?
Yes.

"I don't own a car"

As always the answer lies in the profile smile
Yes, I don't own a car now but I do drive, quite a lot as it happens but I've never driven further than Newquay. wink

Nicely done though Cornish Girl, remind me to never let you near me and a garden path at the same time smile
As the end of the garden path stops at the cliff top then I had better not lead you up any more. wink

With such a small economy how do they propose to pay off all the debts they will be taking with them?
Well if I was making that patch of the British Isles independent, I'd be setting it up as a corporate and personal tax haven relative to England to attract the wealth north of the border

Also worth remembering there's basing rights for the RN and RAF which would no doubt attract a tidy income.

One could also do other stuff like lobby the EU to get favourable fishing quotas or regulations and try to get a lion's share of the North Atlantic and North Sea catch landed through Scottish ports.

I don't believe that the dispropotionately high level of public expenditure north of the border is reflective of economic impotence

I think the extra money per capita from the treasury is more to do with the geography of Scotland rather than anything else. It's a big place with a small population outside of the central belt, let alone the numerous Island communities. All of these places need access to the same services as elsewhere in the UK, but that is always going to cost more than it would do compared to somewhere with a large static population.
