The Portuguese are our oldest allies and the Dutch don't seem to mind us going by the ones that I have encountered.

I guess the same stance they have of the French deterrant, whatever that is. So, I don't know, but surely it will be the same view for both us and France.

As for this EU Army, with the existance of NATO, an EU Army serves no purpose other than to move us further from the US as far as military co-operation is concerned. Read into that, what you will.......
A long time ago, did the French not see their involvement with the Germans as a means of matching US power after they were let down by us (UK) giving in to the US over Suez?
Not sure, but they've certainly tied themselves to Germany in recent years, we aren't Europes favourite nation by a long shot. Not sure why, maybe because we are so close to the US (or were until Obama rocked up).

"At the same time, it affected attitudes to Europe. Famously, German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, on learning of the disaster, told the French foreign minister 'Europe will be your revenge'.

"Suez convinced French leaders - and after 1958 that meant de Gaulle - that Europe was the future."

In the 1960s, de Gaulle translated the new policy into action: withdrawing from the military command of Nato in 1966, and twice vetoing British entry into the European Economic Community - mainly out of fears that Britain would adulterate Europe's vocation.

Ambivalence towards "les Anglo-Saxons" of course predated Suez.

But from the late 1950s, suspicion of Britain and the US became semi-official Gaullist policy, as France sought to project an independent voice in the world via Europe. Much followed.
Edit: Longer quote from German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer...

Adenauer said:
France and England will never be powers comparable to the United States and the Soviet Union. Nor Germany, either. There remains only one way of playing a decisive role in the world, that is to unite to make Europe. We have no time to waste: Europe will be your revenge.

Interesting and worrying, it seems to be happening and I believe will happen whether we like it or not. The views of the population don't matter, regardless of who wins the general election I have no confidence in a referendum happening at all.

I've never met a Dane who was anti British either, and apart from the extremists who now seem to have morphed into extortion gangs etc in Ireland, I've never had a problem with the Irish either. The Braveheart fans in Scotland may be a bit different, but they are hardly a majority......

You can be assured that a large proportion of the world's population detested the British before the United States even existed.
Seriously? Who apart from the Spanish and the French?
Dutch

That represents only a small proportion of the world's population, not a large one. Ignoring the fact that trade flowed freely across the North Sea, much through Flanders, there is little historic fact to suggest the "British" were reviled and detested.

By the way, the Scots are British, I'd have though a well-read chap like you would have known this, it's been in the news a lot lately.

Or do you really mean these foreign folk all hated the English?

Remember the Farage/Clegg debate.

bbcnews said:
He(Farage) said he did not want Britain to be part of an "expansionist" EU foreign policy, claiming that the EU wants its own "army and navy".

Mr Clegg said this was a "dangerous fantasy that is simply not true".

Indian sub-continent, most of West Africa, the Chinese weren't too keen on us either.
