Is it the same path Zimbabwe took, the results are similar, I've just googled Mugabe to find out what his leanings were. Self declared Socialist apparently, but favoured conservative economic policies, which leads me to think it was just his corruption that killed Zimbabwe's economy.
Is that conservative economic policies such as land expropriation/redistribution (i.e. attempted equality of outcome)? The two parties that merged to form ZANU PF were both backed by Communists, it was never going to work out well with people like that in charge.

Mrs RT was on the phone to her brother last night. Apparently Maduro has blamed the earthquake on the USA, who have a big machine that started it off.

Her sister, in Caracas, said that people there are totally dumbfounded by the currency reform. The country is at a virtual standstill. The massive hike in the minimum wage is beyond the ability of employers to pay, but they have been told they will be thrown in jail if they don't obey it. So guess what? People are being laid off by the thousand.

Everyone elses fault apparently - some of the interviews I've seen over the last few days have been beyond a joke.

Th problem is that in a few years' time, when all opposition, including online content that questions the ideology, is outlawed, the general populous begin to believe whatever they're spoon fed by these corrupt and evil regimes, because they don't know anything else.

Hope the EU doesn't end the same way.

I just happened to be watching sky news and saw this thread at the same time. I have serious issues with what I have just viewed.

The reporter stated that the women and her four children have been travelling/living rough non stop for a month.

I've had a period of time as a single parent of two. Any parent knows how draining life can get at times and how lack of sleep feels!

Her teeth look better than mine, her eyebrows have obviously been shaped, I don't see any signs of any bags under her eyes, not even a hint. Her clothing looks fresh, clean and good condition, as are her footwear, nice white and no dirt to be seen. Kids clothes are all in the same condition as mums.

If you had spent 4 weeks on your own with 4 kids, subsisting on handouts as the reporter says, I know I wouldn't look so well turned out as she does.

This reminds me why I hardly watch TV/mainstream news anymore.

Strange..

I have seen dirt poor people who live in muddy shacks in the jungle, but they and their children are immaculately turned out. Venezuelan women are particularly proud and the average Venezuelan woman would rather die than be seen looking less than her best.

We've just had a chat with the wife's brother, and there is more Maduro madness going on. Not content with moving the minimum wage up to some 180k new Bolivares, more than many employers can afford to pay and thus making jobs unviable, he has now announced that professional jobs (doctors, managers, academics, etc.) will have their salaries reduced to the same base level.

So now we have half the country unable to find work at the new rate, and the other half seeing their remuneration slashed to the level of unskilled workers.

Army wages, naturally, are untouched.

I remember watching a documentary about an American film maker who had befriended Castro and three farming brothers. He met a Doctor in the local hospital who was earning about $100 a month and this was only a few years ago. Maybe all these Health workers crying out for a Labour Government should take note.

All is not well in the garden of Corbyn, McDonnell and Abbot's favourite little Republic; it appears Senor Maduro is reading directly from the Soviet book of bolshevism and once in power doesn't actually like what the proletariat vote for....

Fascinating program on BBC2 last night talking about Chavez and Venezuela.
He was charismatic and, initially at least, enacted various laws to take people out of poverty. Then megalomania began to take over; too many yes men, no serious opposition. Power corrupts and he had absolute power.
And then Maduro....the same but without the charisma, intellect or the luck (falling oil prices).
No doubt what is happening in Venezuela today started under Chavez.
I find it fascinating, and appalling, how such an oil rich country can be so poor.
And yes, Corbyn and Livingstone were shown blowing smoke up Chavez’s ass.
