If you want to be a tube driver you do your time as platform staff then apply for driver training, so it's not really a closed shop is it.What pisses you off is that you'd like to go straight in as a driver and not deal with the great unwashed on the platforms and unfortunately no matter how highly educated you are you can't.

All of the facts should be publicised so that Jo Public is aware exactly what the arguments are about and can make their own decisions about what is fair - rather than some journalist with an agenda.
Earnings, working hours, overtine, sick pay, pensions, closed-shop, benefits - all of it.

I love the way you call the public the great unwashed. Some of the Underground staff could spend a little more time in the bathroom.
I'm not convinced, by the way, that tonker is desperate to become a Tube driver.

Today's first hand experience of the lovely station staff is from a journey from London Bridge to Holborn.
First sight of station staff was at the wide gates to the Northern Line. Plenty of hurrying passengers fumbling through as per usual.
Two fine upstanding members of station staff 'manning' the barriers to assist I guess. One leaning all over the wide gates/barrier as if his legs had stopped working and he was being dragged back to school after the summer holidays. The second one standing far enough away from the flow of passengers that you couldn't get his attention if you tried. He was also engrossed in his phone and looked as though he was playing a game!!
Two less professional slobs you would struggle to find. And this is clearly a busy tourist heavy station and outside rush hour.

Haha that's funny! I go through various stations on the Jubilee line every day and this is pretty much par for the course. First sight of station staff was at the wide gates to the Northern Line. Plenty of hurrying passengers fumbling through as per usual.

A closed shop wouldn't advertise the job the union would approach staff re becoming a driver, this clearly isn't what happens with L.U.
So they advertise the job but only platform staff can apply?Sounds like a good use of resources.
And yes, that is still exactly what a "closed shop" means.
If it were open then ANYONE could apply.
It seems this concept is difficult to grasp, along with "it's not about money".

err..."A pre-entry closed shop (or simply closed shop) is a form of union security agreement under which the employer agrees to hire union members only, and employees must remain members of the union at all times in order to remain employed"

Union members have confirmed previously that they really don't care about the general public's view of them nowadays as they know they will always be against them.Earnings, working hours, overtine, sick pay, pensions, closed-shop, benefits - all of it.
