A great little read about the measures taken to stop Argentina getting their hands on Exocet missiles from France.

Love Thatcher or loathe her, she certainly had balls and conviction. I can't imagine Blair, Brown or PR-guru Cameron having the guts to carry it through.

To be fair to Cameron he was under similar pressure from the US not to intervene militarily in Libya and did so anyway ignoring the threats.

Blair wanted to hand back Gibraltar to the Spanish.

As for the Falklands, well read for yourself. Of course, in 2007 he stated that sending a Task Force was the right thing to do, and he would have done the same rolleyes

Thatcher's gov also looked at ditching Gibraltar. It was a big money loser.
The Falklands seemed to be heading the way of the Argentines anyway, the war completely reversed that slow direction.

More Argentine history.

Not as big as the loss of votes associated with such a move.

The Americans were keen to get their feet on the ground there eh?! I reckon they'd still be there today if Thatcher had allowed that. I'm glad she stuck to her guns.

Like any country, the USA will do what's best for itself.

Yeah I don't think anyone would be surprised to read about the US trying to further its own position at the expense of the UK's, nothing has changed since and nothing is likely to change in the future.

The UK has too simply stand on its principles and not let itself be moved on these types of affairs.

TBF if it wasn't for the US throwing their weight around in 1831 the Argies might actually have a legal right to them. hehe

Hypothetical. If someone told me a rock in Spain was costing me money, I'd vote to dump it as well.

Quite. Madness.
1982 was before Thatcher and Reagan got really cosy?

You could argue that he was smitten because of the FI and the mandate she had after the following election.

So, reject colonialism? They'll all be buggering off back to Europe then, and leaving Argentina to its original inhabitants then? It's like a loop.

Its funny because recently he said that the UK wasn't in violation of any resolutions or doing anything wrong. He also reminded Argentina one of the main principles of the UN, self-determination. He has said this previously a few years back on the same issue. Essentially this kills the Argentine argument stone dead.

Another interesting thing is she keeps quoting resolutions which are not only expired but Argentina violated with its illegal invasion of the Falkland Islands.

She's not very bright, poor girl.

While this argument has no traction outside South America and precious little outside Argentina, there's enough mouthbreathers in Argentina that will believe her hogwash and keep voting for her.
