Claimed country of origin. I bet there would be fewer "Syrians" if they knew a failed application would mean a seat on the first flight back there
In one respect, the genuine Syrian refugees need to be homed and fast, partly because they need and deserve a new start, but also so the hangers on and economic migrants cannot hide among them. The trouble is, I suspect, is rather too many want safety to equal UK and not anywhere else in the EU. That is a problem which has to be dealt with.BlackLabel said:
I seem to recall (either on this Calais thread or the deleted one) that a comment was made that a married woman who went out there was 'filling her boots' and that comment was subject to a fair degree of negativity from certain people... looks like it was bang on the moneyI returned from Germany last week, drove to the Calais side of the Tunnel.
From 30 miles out, it's groups of young men walking all over the carriage way, when we got to a set of roadworks that led you off a slip road, onto a roundabout and back onto the carriageway, these guys were throwing things at lorries.
Then about 15 miles in, on all the exit sections of the motorway, were broken barriers/barrels/debris. I thought all the stories of trying to force people to stop was a bit over-exaggerated, but it's not.

Turns out it's pretty much a weekly occurrence when we got chatting to the British passport control chap on the way back from Le Mans. We'd experienced the same, with added riot police and teargas for good measure, and it does hit home how desperate some of these people are. From 30 miles out, it's groups of young men walking all over the carriage way, when we got to a set of roadworks that led you off a slip road, onto a roundabout and back onto the carriageway, these guys were throwing things at lorries.

I guess we only hear about it when the BBC or DM can be bothered to report on it.
