Very much this. I work to the job, not to the clock.
Same here. POETS day is an alien concept though I know it applies elsewhere, is it a public sector thing?

It's more of a manufacturing thing. Back in the day most factories finished early on a Friday.

Ditto! If an employee wants to leave early on a particular day with no medical reason then they should be making it up on another day.

There is something motivational about some relaxed rules on a Friday. It can often increase output.

Surely that's a good case for getting rid of some of the rules.

I dont think public or private is anything to do with it...

My brother works at data recorders place, and they all finish at 12 on a Friday...

For some companies the system works, for others, it is impractical....

Many people are on fixed hours per week, and as such providing those hours are met, within the week it doesn't matter if spilt equally 5 days, or over 4.5 days.

Higher paid jobs would generally see people working equal hours per day, generally.

It's more a manufacturing thing, the last two companies i have worked for have had POETS Fridays, both make up the Friday early finish by adding the hours back in the week, my current employer finishes at lunch on Friday, but we work 7.30-4.15 with a 45min lunch Monday-Thursday to cover the half day off.
It is also damn useful as the weekend starts on Friday at 12.30 and Saturday's shopping and running around is done on Friday.

Is it really a "perk" if you're salaried based on the actual hours?

I've seen and heard some comments here and there from people with American companies coming over who say they were pleased to 'do the European thing' on Fridays. If there's been any research on what benefits it brings to employers and employees long-term it's not easy to find but if it pays for itself and is a win-win then great. For people used to working until the work is done it seems an odd approach but live and let live out early as they say wink

If I did this, I'd never go home. There's always more work to be done.

Fortunately, as a contractor, I can come and go more or less as I please.

We finish at 3:30 on a Friday, after starting at 8 and finishing at 4:30 with half an hour lunch for the rest of the week. I'm normally there at 7:20 every morning to miss traffic and if I worked to the job I would never leave and there isn't an option of working remotely, company policy.

I worked in a place where we did 8:30 - 5, but then that was changed to 8:30 to 3:45 on a Friday with 15 minutes less for lunch to cover for it. Great for everyone apart from me because I often had to talk to the west coast of the USA on a Friday so I had to work until 5, so everyone else got an hour off work and I got an hour of unpaid overtime. frown

Quite often on a friday I'll leave my office a few hours earlier, walk downstairs and like most other days keep on working until I fall asleep.
