Edit: related to this I saw on the news a story about a female soldier killed defusing bombs in Afghanistan. Jesus, that job must demand the biggest balls in the world. Just the thought of having my face close to a device that could blow bits of me into the clouds makes my spine chill.

Was listening to that earlier. Defusing one IED when another exploded. Retreated, and decided to go back in and got caught by a third.

She was more of a man than every keyboard warrior on the planet combined.
yes Lisa Head. I knew her well.

We've done some days with the soldiers of Mission Motorsport recently (www.missionmotorsport.org) and it is shocking, sobering and terrifying in the true sense of the words to hear the guy's stories and see what has happened to them.

I don't use FB so haven't seen the man's page but it seems odd that this sort of drivel isn't having him arrested like the guy that tweeted vileness about the heart attack footballer.

Sorry, I have no idea what you are gibbering on about. You posted something which clearly intimated that the poster should have said the average IQ is 100, you've been proved wrong and now you are trying to wriggle out of it. Derek, I know you have lived a perfect life, but it is OK to be wrong every now and again.
Half under average.

It's simple enough. Read carefully and it will all become clear, at least to those who are around average IQ and above for this particular country.

There was no suggestion in my post that average IQ in this country is 100. Nothing at all.

Let my put it simply. It is not correct that half the population is under average IQ. Mind you, sometimes it might seem like it.

Admit it, you didn't think that one through, did you?

I was being lazy and slightly flippant, lies, damn lies and statistics, let's not go into long winded discussions on the differences between median, mean and average. Assuming the IQ scores of a population form a bell curve (which they tend to) "roughly" speaking half the population will be below and up to average and half average to above. That's before we consider if IQ is even a reliable measure of intelligence.

I didn't mean to deflect this thread off topic.

The percentage above or below the mean iq would depend on the distribution. You are correct if we assume a normal distribution, but if skewed to the lower end, you could have significantly more than 50% of the population below the mean.

Most of us are very much so, but like everywhere we have our share of well below average intelligence individuals, given that average IQ isn't that high (104.2 for the UK) and half the population are below that figure, there are an awful lot of numbskulls wandering around, a surprisingly large number have managed to work facebook and twitter.
the comment about half being under the average may be wrong - it depends on the shape of distribution curve : if a "normal distribution" that is correct as the average [mean] and median are the same.

If however the IQ distribution is not a "normal distribution" curve - then the median may be different from the average.

Whatever the distribution curve the "median" is always at the 50% percentile.

A simple example is income : the "average" is a few thousand above the "median" ... as it is skewed to the right by a long tail of higher earners.

edit : looks like I have partly duplicated another post [ I should read the whole thread first smile ]

English is a nationality (and way of life!), not a race.

If he'd said 'caucasian', you'd have part of a point, but then he wouldn't have been talking about solely the English, since lots of English people are not caucasian, and even more caucasians are not English.

If he'd said 'Anglo Saxon' I think that probably would have been racist, but nobody would have taken him very seriously. Not sure about Anglo-Saxon.

He was being xenophobic but to my knowledge that, whilst stupid, isn't illegal.

I'll be careful about what I say here...

Does it really matter that he is a 'jock'?
Even by you using that term is derogatory towards Scottish people.

He is an idiot-plain and simple. He deserves a slap. However, it doesn't matter which country, or part of a country he lives.
He did refer to it as English but clearly he is as thick as he is nieve.

I'm from Scotland, Glasgow to be precise and unfortunately we live in a society with these people.
I'm very close to someone who served our country and lost his limbs. He is as scottish as they come but fights for our country- Britain.

Since we're being precise about these things here, doesn't he actually fight for the United Kingdom? Genuine question.

We refer to 'British Forces', but is that actually correct?

The people in Scotland that express anti-English sentiment are usually the sort of people you don't want to spend a moment with if possible.
They will also usually be anti-anything not from their town, street, family etc.

As with all prejudicial people, usually not worth listening to.
Unfortunately the anti-Scot's sentiment from England is on the rise, or perhaps just more noticeable due to the internet.
This thread title for example is the sort of thing that is becoming more common on this site lately.
