RIP Gerry Anderson

RIP.
Gerry hated the puppets and his original plan was for his shows to be made with real people/locations.
He was forced to use puppets due to budget restrictions.
I don't know if he actually hated the puppets, he just wanted to do live-action shows and felt he was being typecast instead as a specialist in puppet animation. Whatever he felt about it, he was, is, and always will be, a TV legend.Gerry hated the puppets and his original plan was for his shows to be made with real people/locations.

For me it all started with Fireball XL5. Nearly 50 years on I can remember watching in black & white before colour came in.
Yup, and I also liked Space Patrol. I always assumed it was a Gerry Anderson series too, but since it never got a mention in all the obituaries and I was sure I hadn't imagined it I had a quick google, and it wasn't one of Gerry's. Well I never. Two puppet style space programs from different sources... Anyway, Fireball XL5 was probably the first programme I remember really getting into (B&W, I always fancied a real Zoonie the Lazoon as a pet) then Stingray and Thuderbirds. I never really got into Captain Scarlet as by that time a certain degree of logic and fairness had crept in to the young psyche, and I always kind of sided with the Martians - after all they were the ones shot at first. If they'd left the Martians in peace there wouldn't have been a problem. As for Joe 90 and later stuff - I just never really watched it...outside the target audience age probably. But Thuderbirds in particular seemed pretty timeless/ageless; I could still watch it now - even though the criminals always take the time to label things 'Bomb' etc.
His funeral today in Reading. Very nice piece on Newsnight tonight.
