Was about to comment on FB and then noticed it's been done by the father of a close friend of a friend. She has heaped praise on it so for the sake of keeping group peace I'll stay out of it

That is a little bizarre. I don't claim to know art but it doesn't actually look like a bad portrait, just of someone completely different to who it's supposed to be.

You're the 2nd person to have said something like that, and I think you're missing the point.

A portrait is quite often an 'interpretation'. The question most people are asking is not "why isn't it photo realistic" but rather, "why is it such an unflattering interpretation".

She has a killer smile too and yet in this portrait she looks more like a disappointed horse.
