So what is it, after listening to the sounds, secret internet campaign to let off fireworks everywhere?
Or Aliens.
Meteor shower? I've no idea what one sounds like but a lot of small stones exploding in mid air could sound like fireworks I suppose.Or Aliens.

The A1 was shut yesterday due to reports of an explosion near a military barracks - no evidence of an explosion found though iirc - maybe the same thing?
Hadn't given it a second thought, but was there not also an explosion noise in manchester the other day that had the fire brigade out, if I recall they found nothing. montymoo said:

It does sound a lot like fireworks in that clip, especially if there was low cloud or fog in the area it was recorded. (Muffled noise, travels further) Having Googled a few videos of those pulse engines, they have a constant machinegun sounding racket, whereas that clip is a fairly stuttering noise that doesn't seem to change in pitch or volume. (It could be of course that the clip actually is fireworks, and someone just submitted it claiming it was what they heard that night)
It doesn't explain why people across the country and the USA were hearing it all around the same time though, so that would suggest that something was either moving East to West (or vice versa) at high altitude, or something was occurring at very high altitude over the Atlantic somewhere allowing all in the region to hear it.

Blimey, thats spooky!
Was out walking the dog this evening, around 5:00pm and heard what sounded like a major fireworks display going off in the distance. Did not really pay too much attention until I realised after a good few minutes that it was constant and was a more duller sound than fireworks. Puzzled as to what it was, but certainly not fireworks.

I'm quite intrigued by this story now, with a few people on Twitter claiming to have heard them again in Scotland late on 30 Nov then around 0200 01 Dec in Surrey, and a mate here in Kent said he heard something like this 30 Nov around 1700.
Found this video of a meteor exploding in the atmosphere, with an initial loud bang followed by a few moments of rumbling and other explosions as smaller bits break up, sounds like a likely candidate for the other night's events perhaps?

I was out on my bike at around noon in county down, riding along the beach could hear a cconstant series of dull booming noises. Lots of people were looking rather puzzled. It souned like it might have been coming from across the other side Belfast Lough. My first thought it was the sound of clay pigeon shooting in the distance, but shooting isn't allowed on Sundays here.

Like I said, I bet more people are on the band wagon, part of the crowd, "yeah I heard it as well....."Some friends of mine who were camping out on Saturday night heard it, around 10/10.15pm, central belt Scotland. Where they were camped is only 1.5m from my house, and they texted me to ask if I heard it, as I'd left them about half an hour before hand to walk home.
Quite surprised to see there have been reports of this on Saturday all the way from Fleet in Hampshire as far north as Aberdeen.
