Notting Hill Carnival crime fest.

Anyone who has moved to the area in the last 50 years is aware of the carnival and the issues it brings. It is not like it started last year and now everyone is shocked
Wasn't my point- my point was that the reported crime figures don't accurately reflect the full extent of the lawlessness. basherX said:

Have you ever been to Notting Hill? it isnt all pretty coloured Georgian Houses you know. Walk round the Winterbourne and Nottingwood estates after dark and the carnival will suddenly appear very law abiding. It is an area of the haves and have nots sitting very close together that many do not realise.carreauchompeur said:
It's absolute bks. Any major 'cultural event' which requires routine boarding up of vast swathes of the town shouldn't be permitted.
The people of Atherstone, among others, may disagree:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBc8jY99hgI

In which case, why should the "lawlessness" of the carnival be a surprise to anyone?
My original point was that it isn't a surprise to the residents (of which I was once one):basherX said:

100 arrests per day vs an attendance of around 1m people per day? hardly a crime fest.
Tell that to the residents. The police and thus the arrest statistics, understandably, only scratch the surface of the criminality. Elroy Blue said:
The final arrest total for just yesterday was 156. 88 so far today and another 26 knives seized. Crazy
Just trying to get my mind behind this; any idea as to attendance figures? It's sort of important if I'm to try and judge the "criminality quotient" of the event. I do appreciate that if you're the people on the ground trying to police it, it's a tad less relevant.Einion Yrth said:

It's a massive symbol of multiculturalism and a fantastic party to boot.
Was down there yesterday (8 adults and 6 kids), had a right laugh and guess what - none of us got stabbed.
Same as for the previous 19 carnivals I've been to.
Brexit voters may disagree but I think it's fantastic.
My daughter said earlier in the year, about bank holiday and what to do? Hubby suggested taking their kids (2 girls nearly 3, and nearly 7) to Notting Hill Family Day and then stay in London for a few days, or if we can afford it, take them to Disneyland Paris, but with all the trouble in France we're thinking London?
No contest, I said, go to Paris! Been once to the 'carnival, once is enough I said, but up to you.
They're having a whale of a time. Guess where?

You were doing well up to this point; now you just look like an idiot. It tends to be from people who (i) have never been or (ii) have got a pile of cash and have just moved in and are trying to stop it.
None of whom seem to want to join in.
The veiled racism in the previous threads just made me thing of Brexit voters.

Perhaps it shouldn't. If the 17.4 million of us were all racists then I think, as a nation, we'd be pretty well f'cked. Fortunately most of us had other reasons for voting leave. Note I'm not suggesting that no leave voters are racists, some surely are, but it's a much more complicated position than "all Brexit voters are racist", innit. AC43 said:
