Hardly surprising. In case anyone thought Saudi Arabia was turning a corner towards more progressive views, they arrested all the prominent female activists who had fought for the right to drive.

Don't worry, I'm sure our feminists will be right on it as soon as they've solved the problem of lead actresses getting a few million less than lead actors.

The Saudis are unhappy over this tweet.

“Saudi Arabia has said it is freezing all new trade and investment with Canada over its "interference" in the Gulf Kingdom's internal affairs.
In a series of tweets, the Saudi foreign ministry said it was expelling the Canadian ambassador and recalling its own envoy in Canada.
The move comes after Canada said it was "gravely concerned" about the arrest of several human rights activists.

Surely an overreaction by Canada.

After all, Tony Blair & his Foundation don't think it's a problem.

Canada not playing along with the Saudi PR machine is a good thing, surely. I'm sure we'd be with them if SA weren't so keen on our weapons exports.

No mention of Yemen though, which is still being bombed into dust by SA-US-UK.

I don’t think our current Govt feel that it’s much of an issue either.

Funnily enough this must be one of the few threads where the majority of PH agree with Corbyn....

First point, quite.

Second, more that Corbyn agrees with the majority of PH.

Hilarious cock-up. Serves them (the Saudis) right.

By the way, I do wonder if the Canadian's are learning something from Trump with regards use of Twitter .

Well you can understand the Saudi anger here - the Canadians have singled them out to be rude to! The Canadians are never rude to anybody!

I’m sure Saudi will ban ice hockey as a response next...

The Saudi Response to the Canadian tweet has been a complete overreaction. Wonder what's really going on? I guess this is a message to other countries in the West.

"Saudi Arabia's diplomatic spat with Canada looks set to escalate following a report that the Middle Eastern country has instructed its brokers to sell Canadian assets.

Anger between the two countries erupted last week when Canadian officials urged Riyadh to "immediately release" women's rights activists Samar Badawi and Nassima al-Sadah.

Now the Financial Times has reported that the Saudi central bank and state pension funds have instructed third party asset managers to sell Canadian bonds, stocks and cash. The selling is said to have begun on Tuesday."

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/08/08/saudi-arabia-is-se...

"On Tuesday, a day after the Saudi Arabian government announced plans to withdraw all Saudi students from Canadian universities, colleges and other schools in retaliation for Canada’s criticism of the country’s human-rights record, the Islamic kingdom’s main state wheat buying agency told grains exporters it will no longer buy Canadian wheat and barley in its international tenders. Meanwhile, the United States - Canada’s most important ally and largest trade partner - declined to come to the defense of the Canadian government in the growing diplomatic crisis.

And at academic hospitals across the country, program directors of medical schools are scrambling to replace nearly 800 Saudi Arabian doctors-in-training after the country ordered all of its sponsored students out of Canada. Saudi Arabia is by far the largest source of international medical residents and fellows training in Canadian hospitals, the result of a decades-old visa program under which it pays about $100,000 a year for each trainee."

They've gone utterly nuts.

They're reporting all sorts of things on Saudi TV about Canada:
- Canada needs to improve its prison system to bring it up to international human rights standards
- Referencing 1,000 mysteriously murdered women
- Accusing Canada of ethnic cleansing
- Accusing Canada of supporting terrorism
- Claims Canada treats its citizens like Myanmar treats the Rohingya muslims
- Claiming Canada has the world's highest suicide rate
- Declaring their support for Quebec independence
- Claiming Canada has the world's highest rates for persecution of women

It goes on - Iyad el-Baghdadi has documented it here:
https://twitter.com/iyad_elbaghdadi/status/1026781...

All this because Canada suggested they should release women's rights activists!

this one made me laugh
"Canadian human rights violations" infographic by Saudi-owned @AlArabiya says "75% of all prisoners died before their trial between 2015 and 2017"

What I still find remarkable is that politicians and celebrities etc still seem to be unable to help themselves from spouting st on Twitter. If there was ever a social media site that should be canned it's that st.
