It is not about crazy theories of an American attack.

We have a guy who since about February or March has had a decent chance of becoming the next president of the most powerful nation on earth. Rather than diplomatically keeping their opinions to themselves many British politicians think it is a great opportunity to indulge in some virtue signalling.
I disagree. "Decent chance" is debatable. Our politicians are meant to represent us. And "virtue signalling" is actually a good thing. It lets the congenitally stupid know what kind of behaviour is and isn't acceptable.

If he wasn't such a huckster (a) he wouldn't have been able to convince so many people to vote for him. (b) the GOP wouldn't be holding its nose

To put it into context that some on NP&E might understand - if Jeremy Corbyn promises to raise the minimum wage to £40,000 a year and get the Mexicans to pay for it and people elect him it doesn't actually make what he said achievable or sensible.

Put that way, it's quite a situation they (R) got themselves into over the pond.

Entertaining though.

Jim Messina, who is a genuine genius at campaign strategy and who managed the Obama 12 campaign and was strategy advisor to the Tory's last year, was on TV last night. He is chairing one of the major democratic super PACs this year. He said that he had been praying every night for the past year that the GOP would select Trump as their candidate and that his prayers had been answered. This is not a naturally garrulous guy nor one who is normally in the media at all so I was surprised to see him and pleased at his certainty. If Jim Messina is positive about an outcome I'll take notice.

There is so much oppo on Trump and it's going to be interesting to see how he deals with it as it comes out in a relentless stream. No it's not, we know how he's going to deal with it! Badly. laugh He's already threatening to sue the NY Times and various others and it hasn't even started yet. Starting from June hundreds of millions of dollars will be spent by anti Trump PAC's in ads and none of it will be showing Trump in a good light. Don's Twitter feed will explode!

And yet you are not confident of a Trump defeat to bet the ranch on it. smile

Thought so. And yet you are the one who mentioned odds for all the candidates and how Hilary was a sure bet.

So are you pro Hilary or anti Trump?

I can only equate Trump to "Eddie the Eagle" (for those old enough). He has no experience, doesn't have the skills (apparently) but has the drive, and means to compete.

His campaign to date, is full of male cow excrement, and personal slights, but then again the American system is all about negative campaigning (something I hate). The GOP are no doubt in shock that he is the presumptive candidate, but the alternative is equally abhorrent.

The primary electoral system here allows a small percentage of voters to decide who will stand in the "real election".

Everybody I know here (in the US) is aghast with either candidate.

That is rather obvious, thanks. And all politicians are hucksters to some degree. The question is, who is the real Trump in terms of policy. Is he simply trying to appeal to as many as possible, or is he actually a centrist.

I would say it is all a ruse, but the reason the GOP don't like him is not because he is a huckster. Not even close.

I think anyone who is running has a decent enough chance that other leaders would be advised to keep a lid on it about any of them.

As well as being Sec of State (second most important job in government)
When you take your US Citizenship test you will realize the order is:
President
Vice President
Speaker

It's an important job but not as important as the ones above.
I disagree. VP is not a more important job than Sec of State. Most VP's are have little more than ceremonial duties (think Dan Quayle, now imagine him doing something taxing or important). Speaker is not even a government job as he is often (as in this case) an agent of the opposition. He has no brief from the president. The sec of state runs a huge department, deals with mighty issues and advises the president on them (taking out Bin Laden for instance).

In other news it is being seriously suggested that right at the top of Trump's list to be his VP candidate is.......... Sarah Palin. rofl I guess everyone else has said no except Christie but Palin? The moron in chief? Please let it be so.
The whole point of the U.S. system is compromise. We are supposed to have a President who works with the VP and Speaker to figure out a compromise to every issue that needs legislation passed. That covers budgets, war and pretty much everything internal and external.
It has worked like this for two centuries no matter which party held which position.
Only in the last few years has the system broken down and that is because there has been a refusal to compromise. This is why so many people across the country feel so jaded with politicians and have voted for Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump.

It is often forgotten in these days of the "imperial presidency" that the founding fathers saw the role of the president as to take the lead on foreign affairs, and congress on domestic affairs.

Possibly I'm misinformed - I got the impression that Obama was on a non-starter with a significant element of Republicans purely because of his colour. If you think about how long the Birther issue ran for, it is very hard to come to a compromise when you're faced with that kind of mentality. Combine that with the fact that his healthcare policy was anathema to the GOP he was faced with an uphill struggle pretty much from day 1.

FWIW Obama was only hated by the GOP and their nuttier cousins the Tea party. Trump is hated by both GOP, Democrats, and the Tea Party. So in theory you could argue that it's going to be hard for him to compromise. In practise it will be very easy since he has less principles than a pig rolling in its own muck.

It's politics, be prepared for anything and everything as we gave witnessed everywhere.

Did you always have such a low opinion of Trump, or only recently?

Americans would be pretty stupid to elect, even nominate, such a low life right?
