Does it matter what kit they were using? Its not like we will ever know anyway. All the methods of entry and insertion are kept under wraps and only rough details are given to the press.Even if they give a detailed story to the Telegraph or Mail youve got to assume its nothing at all like what happened. Have you noticed how some are saying they HAHO'd into the area and some sources say they Helo'd into the area? Cameron says they marched in! Fact is we can speculate all we want but only the few involved will know the full story.

Good effort to them and i hope they crack a few more heads whilst they are out there. Some of these guys are very good mates of mine and i dont even get to hear what they get up to, and ive served with them.

Every hostage is worth the effort, else there would be no need to have these guys in theatre.

If the assault team did use US heli s, would it not make sense to use the crews ( and therefore the cabs ) who are most familiar with the area of operations rather than trying to magic a crew into an unfamiliar area for not really benefit other than jingoism?

Well done to all involved.

Flanders.

Regular Brit troops don't even use brit made weapons. Why bother producing new homemade stuff that's going to need years of development when there are tried and tested suppliers out there who we can rely on? Different to accessories and armour obviously as that's a constantly advancing field and in actual fact we brits do a great job in producing innovative equipment. Just look at the cage armour for Viking and Scimitar that's manufactured and designed in Dorset.

Uksf have free reign to use whatever weapons the see fit for the job. Each man has his own personal weapon with a plethora of attachments at hand. 90% of the small calibre stuff is now silenced or suppressed for extra tactical ability but you will often see the SF lads sporting locally sourced weapons such as the AK in order to save thier own gear for when they really need it. When I was in Afghan in 2006 we often looked to use up the ammo from locally obtained arms before expending our own supplies. You can rely on the AK too where you sometimes doubt the ability of the SA80A2. At the same time though, the situation dictates the requirements and the accuracy of your own gear is often more important than the conservation of your limited ammo.
