It could be, as I don't live in a town and therefore don't have easy access to cash machines, that I think having a small contingency fund at home is the norm.
I'm surprised that so many people seem to be totally unprepared for a slight financial mishap. Presumably these are similar set of people that panic bought petrol a few months ago.
It's not that difficult to be organised and prepared for any eventuality.

Condor, the point you seem to miss from my posts and NBs sarcasm is that there are a huge amount of people for whom payday is vital as they simply do not have enough money to salt away for emergencies. Poor people work too

Perhaps they should live within their means to enable them to have a small emergency fund. TV, Sky, internet, aren't essential. Food, water and a roof over your head are.

I manage to make a Sainsburys basics £2.50 chicken last a whole week - and get by on my paltry £40 a week self-employed earnings. I'm not entitled to benefits, but am quite happy to harvest and forage for food. If I was entilled to benefits then I'd consider myself rich.

I don't see where all these poor people come from - I'm poor in terms of income, but have very few outgoings as I live within my means. I don't buy clothes, make do and mend from clothes I've had over 20 years - don't eat much. Have to pay the usual utility bills which is about all the money I earn.
I still have a small contingency fund for emergencies and a credit card for bigger ones.

Really? um ok, I was just going to suggest that, perhaps, you might not have had the challenges, bad fortune or crap happen to you that puts most people into a situation that challenges them financially. Buuuuut I have a feeling that you will have had a complicated life, full of horrendous misfortune that you fought against and rose, Phoenix like, from the ashes of despair to find a new life, one that made you value the true worth of a spartan life and self sustainment enabling you to be content with 1 pair of underpants a photo of Princess Diana and a fork with one tine missing. I could be wrong though

oh...I just conjured up an image of condor sitting in his underpants eating some roadkill with a 3 tined fork, lit by the light of one candle flickering in a bleak room furnished by one patriotic yet sad picture of our beautiful Princess killed by the dastardly French.....for some reason

I find that image quite appealing biggrin no pic of the princess, but I have practised saving on hot water costs via a solar powered camping shower ( paid the vast expense of £4.10 for a black bag with small tube attached).
I used it to wash my hair last week.
I've also eaten roadkill - so you've got me there smile

Is anyone else with me here.... Condor you are possibly my new personal hero!

I am just hoping you drive a 30 year old V8 Landrover and run it on methanol - which you distill yourself!
