Just finished reading a biography about Boris and he is anything but dim - he is amazingly bright and a very sharp debater. In terms of his intellect he is streets ahead of Millipead/Cameron etc. but covers it well which is why he is so popular. Any bets he will seek a safe Tory seat in 2014, hold a dual mandate for a year and then go for the leadership.
So you think Cameron is unpopular because he doesn't pretend to be dumb? Boris doesn't pretend anything really but its obvious he is smarter than he appears behind the bumbling exterior.

Are you allowed to serve as Mayor and an MP at the same time?

Can you imagine Labour ever having a party leader with even a trace of irreverence to them?

Neil Kinnock had a good sense of humour but only let it be public knowledge after losing two general elections.

Interesting article in The Independent today. Boils down to Boris can't be tory leader until he's a an MP. But he can't become an MP because to do so would be to declare his intention to go for the leader's job, which would effectively scupper his chances.

Looks like he shot himself in the foot going for the Mayor's job.
Nah. Labour government in 2015, Boris will step down as Mayor, take a Tory seat and challenge for the leadership. Win comfortably and be elected as PM in 2020 at latest, aged 56.

At latest, because if it's another coalition or weak government it could well fall apart before 2020 and see Boris elected sooner.

The bumbling exterior was a facade Boris invented at University, between losing a student election and winning it the following election. The details were revealed a few yrs back by the "campaign manager" of the candidate who beat him.

If it was entirely a fascade then it'd be obvious by now. Whats more likely is he tried to be something he wasn't and it backfired, so now he's just himself.

Whatever it is, Boris has many qualities from intellect through plain speaking to popularity with existing and potential Conservative voters in his favour. Detractors and opponents will doubtless continue to underestimate him by focusing on image, in terms of media portrayals, which will remain to Boris's advantage.

In principle not unlike the headlines and stories about Boris.

In practice, Boris towers over Kinnock who isn't in the same league.

No, MacKenzie, one of the most vile individuals to infest the British media in history.
