"We" implies it's a UK / Western / First World problem. It isn't.
I read the same article in Metro and when you break it down there are many, many issues not just the headline grabbing soundbites about fast food outlets throwing away food at the end of the day; or BOGOFs
A lot of things though are "our" fault. We demand 100% availability 100% of the time. We also demand nicely curved bananas; straight carrots etc, etc. So supermarkets pressure their suppliers to deliver that and the growers grow way more than is needed so they have enough to supply and have enough of the cute, pretty, just right fruit and veg.
If there was a way of exporting (quickly) what was left over then everyone would be happy.
