Some friends of mine who were camping out on Saturday night heard it, around 10/10.15pm, central belt Scotland. Where they were camped is only 1.5m from my house, and they texted me to ask if I heard it, as I'd left them about half an hour before hand to walk home.
Quite surprised to see there have been reports of this on Saturday all the way from Fleet in Hampshire as far north as Aberdeen.
And apparently in the US as well Quite surprised to see there have been reports of this on Saturday all the way from Fleet in Hampshire as far north as Aberdeen.
That puts a whole new spin on it then. Presents a new theory as well.
Heard *something* last night just before midnight in the Yorkshire Dales. Neighbours all heard it too so wasn't me having a funny turn...
Didn't sound like any sonic boom from a plane that I've ever heard. More like bombs heard at a distance, and big ones at that - very deep bass booms.
Current conspiracy theories people are talking about:
a) The sound of jets breaking sound barrier through thick cloud, possibly intercepting red pinko commie Russkie planes/boats.
2) Deep earth noises, obviously indicating polar shift / peak oil / caldera explosion etc.
iii) The sound of multiple meteor explosions due to the imminent destruction of earth.
d) Aliens.

That video posted earlier sounds remarkably like the noises recorded on the video linked in the mail

Could it have been upper atmospheric lightning (sprites)?

Mrs Digga and I were walking the dogs, early evening and heard the exact same sort of sound - assumed perhaps fireworks, although the possibility of meteors did occur - but I cannot remember whether it was Friday or Saturday. It was pretty much identical to the mobile 'phone recording in the OP link, although I don't (correct me if I'm wrong) see any other reports at this time...

All the way from the East Coast through to the UK, pop, pop, bang, bang crackle.....That puts a whole new spin on it then. Presents a new theory as well.
We live near Nottingham and I can confirm that both myself and my wife heard dull thuds in the distance at around 6.15pm last night (Sunday) which lasted 30 - 60 seconds. I made a note on my iPad calendar in case I forgot. The noises happened several times in succession, dull thuds, like fireworks or perhaps bombs going off. In the past we have heard noises coming from the Derby direction which was when RR were testing engines but these were of a different sound, plus these dull noises seemed to be coming from further north.
Will be interesting to see if the noises occur again tonight!

FWIW, we were walking on Cannock Chase and the noise seemed to be from the south, but as I said, I can't quite remember which evening - but 1815hrs seems about the right time. One thing for sure, if it's heard so widely, it's not fireworks and, since it's a regular occurrence, it's nothing random/natural. Some sort of secret test craft seems entirely plausible on that basis.
Secret test plane development isn't likely in my opinion. It's happening too often I think. In the US that kind of shenanigans happens around Groom Lake etc, over here usually off the top of Scotland.
I saw a Blackbird over Malaig/Back of Keppoch about 25 years ago. Never seen one over Harrogate (or anywhere, ever) since

I heard those bangs loud and clear a couple of nights ago here, in East Sheen, SW ondon. I just assumed that they were fireworks. Though, at the time, I noted to myself that whoever was setting them off was a bit selfish as it was around midnight when I heard them.
Of course, the sound could well have been fireworks.

Really all depends on what, exactly, they're flying and what they're attempting to do with it - we don't ever get to know these things, so it's relatively futile to speculate.Of course the conspiracy theorists could argue that, whatever it is, might simply be being used to deliberately frighten and cow someone - either the public or, for example, the Russians.
