As it was the biggest Empire ever seen it surely will be in all the history books. Britain effectively created the modern world, including the concept of freedom and democracy. And, of course, made Cricket and Football global sports.
I think the Greek's would probably want a word about Democracy being an English concept.
The greeks came up with the idea, but it was Britain that took it to the world.
If you say so.

a rather British centric view here, the rest of the world might not remember the "empire" quite as fondly. Even your friendly neighbours, Ireland are not quite so enamoured with the great empire.

Democracy propagated by the British empire... Give us your resources, speak our language or you will be shot, killed or imprisoned. Oh yea and we will take the best of your society and make them slaves. Democracy is a beautiful thing in action.

Remember, the British "Empire" invented Concentration camps, must have been spreading all that democracy through re education.

Take the best of society and make them slaves?

Are you sure about that now?

Concentration camps are better than the method of Britain's forebearers.......extinction. Rather civilised in comparison biggrin

Slaves? Are you sure? The backing for this is what, exactly?

To be fair the "concentration" camps used in south africa were a far cry from the ones used in Germany and it is a cheap shot to imply they were.

Slave trade, West Africa, west Indies.. wonder how all that sugar was farmed..... because britain abolished slavery does not mean it did not profit hugely from it. There are positives to the empire but from the rest of the world perspective, it will not be remembered fondly.

So you attribute the slave trade to the British. How terribly dull of you!

You are aware that the Spanish took FAR more slaves to South america, than ever went to the North. By the way, the numbers in the west indies were minute, and it was a thinbg of the times. neither seen as wrong, or immoral, until later. You cannot subject modern morals on an earlier time.

You sure? Even in India they are re-appraising the Raj and many are saying it wasnt such a bad thing (compared to the likely alternatives)

Cheap shot ? over 30 000 only women and children killed through malnutrition and disease, simply because Britain wanted the mineral resources of Southern Africa. No cheap shot, factual. Britain coined the term concentration camp.

Last time a slavery thing came up on here I pointed out 100k western europeans were taken by african raiding parties on coastal towns. Slavery has been going on for a hell of a long time and it wasn't started by the British.

Time is a wonderful healer. 1000 years is a very long time.

For instance, we don't exactly have a national vendetta against the Italians do we?

The slave trade was awful, yes, but not just out of the league of Classical slavery, but playing a different sport I'm afraid.

Not attributing it to the empire, but it was complicit in it's enactment and continuation but certainly instrumental it demise.

Simply? I think not. Of course you could ask the locals which they preferred, the Boers or the British.

Actually, Britain played a huge part in the whole Slave trade.

There was a cycle;

Ships from Britain (Liverpool mainly), sailed to Africa, picked up slaves, and took them to the USA. Te profits from sale in the US were then sailed back to Blighty. That was how the trade worked.

There is absolutely no denying Britains involvement in the Slave Trade!

With regards to Democracy....this is true.

After the Greeks and Romans disappeared, most countries reverted to a feudal system. Which is why Monachys reigned supreme in Europe for the most part of the last Millenium.

Britain was one of the first countries to dissolve the Feudal system and approach a more democratic way of operating. They then took these ideals abroad when the Empire expanded. So in a way, they did bring democracy to the masses.

As they did with industry!
