I look forward to somebody building The Herald of Free Enterprise 2 in a few years so we can enjoy all the fun of maritime disasters without having to go as far as The Atlantic

QM2 can go a fair bit quicker - 30kts vs. Titanic's 24. By the end of the Atlantic liner period they were doing some pretty daft speeds - SS United States averaged the transatlantic crossing at 35.59kts, which is around 40mph.
Indeed they did, however not without a lot of problems.

In our lecture last week on materials degradation we actually got to have a look at one of the props from the SS Normandie, and it's amazing just how much of the leading edge would erode away during the Atlantic crossing from cavitation. Having to replace the pretty hefty props after each stint, well at least when they were going for the blue riband anyway.

China is overtaking Korea these days in terms of high end ship building.

The chinese yards are becomming very accomplished... Just look at the latest warships coming out of them
Maybe this Aussie should ask the Yanks if they mind the Chinese fleet visiting NY then?

"He added that he had invited the Chinese navy to escort the Titanic II to New York."

If they haven't rusted out or broken down at sea in about a year, then maybe they are onto something. smile

The most insane part of this plan

Building it in China

Korea maybe but not china

China still turns out total crap on the shipping front
Agreed; reconstructing a ship famous for sinking in a country that builds crap. This sounds like a formula for a self fulfilling prophecy.
redcard Ambiguous!

It wasn't famous for sinking in China. wink

As for the 'builds crap' bit, I'll add:

...which the rest of the world buys! nuts
It was famous for sinking, full stop. As to buying their crap, yes, but not things like ships and planes; those things kill too fast if crap. wink
True. But give it time (sadly, there is a market for everything if the price is right).

I'm a avid searcher for the ambiguous, especially if amusing.

My favourite in a PH vein:
'He was cut from the wreckage of his racecar with a broken arm and collarbone.'
Amazing what rescue services carry with them! hehe

Back to topic.
I see your formula now. hehe

I can see it now; the Titanic II towing in the Chinese Navy escort into NY Harbor. hehe

What first strikes me using the name 'Titanic' is that it's rather tasteless - somewhat like a marketing gimmick. Could be too that this billionaire is just on a kite flying excerise to see what sort of feed back this proposed project will get. Must say love the bit about the Chinese navy escort to New York.

Edit: On reflection, he's a billionaire, I'm not. So, enough said.

If its a rivert-for-rivet recrfeation I think a lot of people will be very dissappointed at the standard of accommodation
Plus the average Chinese wageslave is likely to turn his nose up at the opportunity to stoke coalfired boilers for 12hrs a day. Actually thinking about it, they might like the change of scenary. scratchchinidea

Ahhh I see you poms havent yet heard of Clive Palmer. He probably just saw the 3D Titanic film and got a little caught up with it. He destroyed a local football team because he got bored with it.

If it actually does come through it will be based on some dodgy deal with his dog owning the Chinese Shipping Coy buying the materials owned by his cat.

He thinks the Australian Greens party is funded by the CIA and wants to have a crack at politics himself. Plays the selective crazy card quite well.

It's on.

The Chinese (renowned builders of quality shipping hehe) are building it. Completion 2016. It will then set off to Southampton for it's "maiden voyage" to New York. Ignoring it's maiden voyage from China to Uk.

They should consider scuttling it. The last one demonstrated that you get more mileage and economic benefit from sunk Titanics than floating ones.

I think the way these things are recorded is that the 'maiden voyage' is the first one with paying passengers. The original of course had to sail from NI to England before its maiden voyage.

The person to keep away from Titanic is the renowned Violet Jessops. She was on the Olympic when it was in collision in the Solent, was a survivor of the Titanic sinking and also survived the Britannic sinking after hitting a mine.
