The torches cost around £500 to make and each torchbearer can buy their own torch for approx £200.

Because a lot of the people carrying the torches are not that well off many Councils have said they will pay for them on behalf of their residents (!).

How many of thsoe do you think will be sold on eBay?

Someone is selling a photo of a torch on eBay. The bidding is at £59,100 smile.

My wife has a right downer on the whole affair, but as a former project manager, I am mightily impressed with the whole thing so far.

As Eisenhower said "only the weather can stop us now".

Running round the country with a torch...surely the biggest waste of effort ever.

Watching it...terminal lunacy

My wife is carrying the torch today. Apparently coca cola are paying for her torch for her. Not sure why or how it works. I just saw a pic of the torches. They're much bigger than I imagined.

Which country would you prefer had the Olympics?

Presumably you'd also like it if we didn't bid for the World Cup? Perhaps we should send the Open championship over to France?
Maybe even you could suggest Wimbledon in Flushing Meadows?

Those other events you've mentioned:
  • Use existing facilities that are already bought and paid for
  • Make money
  • Don't leave ridiculous and embarrassing mouldering 'legacy' white elephants behind (see Athens, Barcelona and others for details)
  • Don't require huge and ongoing income support to sportspeople who do things nobody is interested in watching or sponsoring.
And with the exception of Wimbledon:
  • Take place at many places around the country boosting regional tourism and helping the world understand that 'the UK' and 'London' are not synonyms.

The actual flame is carried in a vehicle that follows the runners. It hasn't gone out.

Day 3 of the Olympic torch in, whisper it, the Grauniad

the article said:
The Relay of the Flame, invented by Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels in 1936 and inexplicably sustained for the London 1948 Olympic games, has gone on ever since.
