I think they should have gone for this:

The prevalence of bad guys with vests is only going to get higher.

Here's what they trialed apparently -

S&W M&P9
Steyr M9
Sig P226 (Enhanced)
Sig Pro
Glock 17 Gen 3 and 4
FNP 9
H&K P30
Beretta Px4
HS2000 (inc a compact version)

The 5.7mm standard project was dropped a decade ago, unfortunately.

Good morning; here at least. smile I have to say I agree that the Glock is a great choice for the forces. I can verify that it is almost impossible to make one fail. Parts of our military are turning in the Barreta for the Sig as we speak, another good choice but I believe the Glock a better choice for general use.
As to caliber; when discussing "which is best", one must really insert application into the debate. What is it to be primarily used for? What one round does well, the other may not, etc. A 9mm is a fast hot round but penetrates so well that it lacks the kinetic energy for a knockdown needed in close combat or home defense (although I use it myself). The .357 Sig round is a hotter, necked down .40S&W designed for the Secret Service for barrier penetrating purposes (I own one in the Glock version). The .40 S&W is a favorite of the police in that it has knock down power but is faster, lighter, and less expensive than the .45ACP. It is basically a 10mm lite. These are but a few examples, application is everything. smile

The P226 is the standard sidearm in the Swedish police, though the P229 is better for concealed carry, which is better for plain clothes. Guess concealed carry isn't an issue for normal Army duties.
there are sigs issued by the army, alot were issued for my herrick . they were meant to be given to drivers, machine gunners etc as a side arm in case crap hits the fan, but as usual the higher ranks kinda bullied their way into having them so they could walk around bastion with them hanging off there waist looking like something out of swat movie, so not enough were in the fobs. sf were the first to get them, but by the time we handed over to 3 commando brigade they are all over the place. ive heard the glock can take more of a beating than the sig though, so its probably more suitable for more conditions. another good thing about the sig is that it is ambidextrous, very useful in any situation.
