There are heaps of very valid an interesting points being made on this thread - well done everyone.

From my point of view the Irish Government need to be very careful here, they are calling an emergency budget around the 7th April, people here are already well pissed off at the state of the Euro against Sterling, nearly parity, so why does a sprig of broccoli cost nearly two euros over here? Why does a packet of cigarettes cost over 8 Euro when it costs around £5 in the UK? SAme with beer, same with pretty much everything.

As I said there is an emergency budget coming up soon, and there is lots of talk about the fact that the governement can't really hit the usual targets too hard as it will just drive the sale of those commodities underground. There is already a huge black market running over here on just about everything... god bless the Irish, everyone knows someone who can get something a good bit cheaper than the next fella.

It's really quite obscene to tell you the truth. I've never had an issue with paying some tax towards the upkeep of the state, but right now just about everyone I know over here who was running businesses and keeping people employed is laying off staff or putting them on 3 day weeks. Consequently everyone is just cutting out the middle man (the government), paying cash in hand, thank you very much. Ahh sure the government finally get their cut when something is bought in a shop and VAT kicks in. But there is a huge amount of cash changing hands which the government never sees sight nor sound of.

Sounds a bit like "Back to the Future" for Ireland. When I lived and worked there in the 1970s the black economy was almost as big as the legit one.
