Predominantly white middle class is about as far from the actual population of the carnival area as you could possibly imagine.
Whatever class they are, I wonder how many were there before the carnival started in 1966? On the point about moving it, I think Ken Livingstone had a go but it didn't really catch on. Laurel Green said:

It's not a photoshop, was just on ITV London - just a quick shot so don't know if it has been keyed or if touched up (artisticly?)And no idea why anyone would leave their car there. It's not as if Carnival is a surprise or anything. I always moved mine out as a matter of course.

It'll probably just been the water-based paint that everyone seems to spray around these days. Not a "thing" when I used to go, very popular now.

Would have to be a stark raving loony to leave it parked there - other than illness, that is.And no idea why anyone would leave their car there. It's not as if Carnival is a surprise or anything. I always moved mine out as a matter of course.

Funny how victim blaming is ok on the UK leading car forum
Some people are never he.d accountable for their actions.

Chances are at Glastonbury a few people got nicked for havung a weekends worth of drugs which also would have happened at the Carnival.

I'd be interested to see their crime recording criteria i.e. is it recorded for a geographic area as 'nottinghill carnival' or if they are naughty and only class the carnival as one street and any arrests etc are recorded as particular streets with no link..
A crime per victim at whatever the location is that the crime occured at - same as usual. There will be some sort of flag attached to each carnival related crime for stats purposesPesty said:
Yeah and women shouldn’t go out in short dresses it’s their fault too I assume?

Its not about victim blaming, its about having even the tiniest amount of common sense. Nobody thought that was a good idea, even if it was allowed.Funny how victim blaming is ok on the UK leading car forum

On the Monday it normally starts quite nicely but as the day draws to an end the atmosphere palpably changes
After nightfall it can get a little crazy and scary .. shutting down the sound systems and the after parties can cause issues
I wouldn’t count the figures till it’s over .. then you need to look at what happens outside the carnival cordons for a true picture

SW4 festival has a capacity of 20,000 NHC sees 2.5 million give or take. In 2015, SW4 festival had 20 odd drug arrests, NHC yesterday about 41, by the media reports. And with that, another episode of the culture wars draws to a close.
2.5 million!fk me if you're going to lie, at least be realistic! Even Google estimates it at around a million. Which if it's anything like the "million Remoaner march" It'll be nearer 3-400K tops over all the days.
In terms of comparison to SW4. Can you give me a break down of the non drug possession crimes. Stabbings, assaults, sexual assaults etc
In terms of culture wars. I will avoid your race baiting. And ask a question. Why does NHC attract far more dheads (pro rata) than other festivals? Is the security better at other events?

So my question is why do the local population who, seemingly move out en-masse when its on, still want the event to go ahead. Is it THAT good for the local economy?

Tell that to the residents. The police and thus the arrest statistics, understandably, only scratch the surface of the criminality.
Anyone who has moved to the area in the last 50 years is aware of the carnival and the issues it brings. It is not like it started last year and now everyone is shockedHaving lived beside, in the middle of and now a couple of miles north of the area for the last 27 years I can assure you all is good.
It's a massive symbol of multiculturalism and a fantastic party to boot.
Was down there yesterday (8 adults and 6 kids), had a right laugh and guess what - none of us got stabbed.
Same as for the previous 19 carnivals I've been to.
Brexit voters may disagree but I think it's fantastic.
I went to my first NHC in ‘92 and have never felt anything but safe

I tend to agree. We haven’t been for a few years as we tend to be down in the Dordogne for the bank holiday weekend these days but we really miss it..

I’m sure the 26 Police officers who have been assaulted have never felt safer, and wouldn’t rather be in the Dordogne I went to my first NHC in ‘92 and have never felt anything but safe

We’d all prefer zero crime but, given the numbers, mit is not the criminal apocalypse thatnthe more hysterical on here paint it to be - very far from it.
