OK - but just to clue you in and save any additional reading this is just a head's up..

.. cancel your sailing holiday in the Red Sea; forecast's not too good.

I still remember the Iranian embassy on TV even thought I was only 5 or so. Stunning footage. Up to that point the SAS was very hush hush, and even Iraq, etc, you don't hear too much about what they are doing. Hard to gauge I suppose.

There is also an advantage to advertising them. Those who do such things may think twice knowing who may be visited.
Unfortunately the French have failed in two attempts over the past few months in similar hostage rescues.
See, there is an example of truth in advertising.
Well, sort of, but they still killed the hostage takers - not much of a silver lining being killed by the French as opposed to the seals, but I know what you mean smile
Ah but if they were using the Foreign Legion the guys doing it were probably all Serbs with a rather dubious background. Probably happier to do a deal with the Somali's to get a cut of the dosh than bother with rescuing some Frenchie.

I take it that you do know my earlier post (the one quoted) was a joke? Not actual holiday advice...

There was an episode of one of the special forces programmes on Discovery that covered this too.

It must be a clear sign that I am getting old and am no longer at the social cutting edge as I need you to explain to me what is funny about that image. smile

I think they were 1ere RMPMa, who aren't especially trained in hostage rescue as such, the latest one was a'hot pursuit' sort of thing.

The FL aren't really into that sort of thing either, although they do have a cell within the parachute regiment that wear gucci boots and raybans, so they may do things like that. Ironically, this group has the unfortunate acronym of 'CRAP' causing much mirth amongst the Brit speakers (of whom there aren't many nowadays).

Good work by the septics.

The SAS has been very quiet of late, their last hostage rescue I can recall was a decade ago in Sierra Leone and their last publicised mission was when they got themselves captured in Libya. They need to do something soon if only to keep the SAS book industry going.
